With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we’re taking a trip back to Feb- ruary 1, 1968, when Gard- ner’s Men’s Wear ran a playful and clever ad in The Heppner Gazette. Instead of chocolates or greeting cards, the ad encouraged wives and girlfriends to “sock him, tie him, and belt him” this Valentine’s Day—of course, referring to socks, ties, and belts! “He’ll love you for it,” the ad promised, suggesting that a well-dressed man made for a happy Valentine. Whether it was a sharp new tie, a warm pair of socks, or a stylish belt to complete the look, Gardner’s had just the thing to make the men of Heppner look their best. Morrow County Fair Secretary Sue Gibbs said Chavez had nev- er sewn in her life before that class and was “thrilled to death” to win the sewing machine. Fun at the Fair is fund- ed through a grant from the Morrow County Cul- tural Coalition. So far, the event has featured classes in art, flower arranging and sewing. BMCC hosts free Valentine’s Day contra dance with live music Pendleton, OR—Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC) invites students and community members to a lively evening of music and movement at a Contra Dance on Friday, Feb. 14, from 7- 9 p.m. in the BMCC Student Union. Kicking off the night, a “Learn to Contra” session will be held from 6:30 to 7 p.m. for newcomers who want to pick up the basics before the dancing begins. No prior experience or dance partner is neces- sary—all moves will be taught before each dance. A live band featuring local musicians will pro- vide music throughout the event.
