Some of those teachers we remember with great fondness. Some of WKHPKDGDVLJQL¿FDQWLQÀXHQFHIRUJRRGRQXV,QWRGD\¶V Gospel, the people of Capernaum recognize Jesus who had come to their synagogue as a teacher. He taught them with authority. This journey of Jesus to the synagogue where He taught and healed a man with an unclean spirit LVWKH¿UVWSXEOLFDFWRI-HVXVLQ0DUN¶V*RVSHO+LVZRUGV had the ring of truth, and people knew He meant them. Do we listen to the words of Christ? What authority do our words carry? 7KH¿UVWUHDGLQJRIWKHGD\WDNHQIURPWKHERRNRI Deuteronomy (18:15-20), is of the powerful communi- cation of Moses before he ends his trip to the Promised Land. He reminds the people of Israel about the work of God, that He will raise up a prophet from among their own people to lead them to the promised Land. Moses recalls the words of the Lord “I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among your kin and will put my words into his mouth; he shall tell all that I command him.” Just to show the prophet is actually a mouthpiece of God, Moses concludes his speech with a reminder to the new prophet: if he fails to speak in the name of the Lord and for the Lord, he shall surely die. In the past two weeks, we have listened to the call of evangelists John and Mark. This week, the Gos- pel of Mark brings us the idea of how Jesus, unlike their contemporary scribes and Pharisees, teaches them with DXWKRULW\:HVHHWKHSURSKHF\RI0RVHVIXO¿OOHGLQWKH teaching of Christ. In Mark, chapter 3, He calls His disci- ples to be with Him, to imbibe the same spirit and power. :KHQ+HFDOOHGWKH¿UVWWZHOYHDSRVWOHV+HFDOOHGWKHP “to be his companions and to be sent out to proclaim the message, with power to drive out devils” (3:14). He gives this power to all of us at the time of our Baptism. We are cleansed from original sin and called to be heirs of this power. What are we doing with that enormous gift, power, we have received in baptism? So many people were in the synagogue, and only WKHPDQZLWKDQXQFOHDQVSLULW¿UVWUHFRJQL]HG-HVXV+H shouts out “What do you want with us Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are: the Holy one of God” (1:26). Jesus never could tolerate evil anywhere around him. He chases evil ones immediately from His site. We too are called to do the same every time – never give the evil one any chance to take possession of one’s life and power. It is good to ask “Am I able to GL൵HUHQWLDWHWKHHYLOVLQPHDQGDURXQGPH"´ “ Do I give the devil his opportunity or do I chase him out when I recognize his presence anywhere around me?” Therefore, Sunday’s message is that we are called to live as Holy ones of God, consecrated, and dedicated. There is a task instilled in all of us to be Holy and upright and use the power constantly to chase the evil ones from our surroundings. Jesus calls every one of us Christians to this moral uprightness. When we live in those moral values, we will be able to exercise power as the children of God. Decisions we make every day in our lives make deep impacts in every one of us; we are to properly utilize that authority that Jesus gives us. For us as Christians, Jesus remains the ultimate authority. That is why we con- fess Jesus not just as our teacher but as our Lord. We are happy to submit to His authority, to His lordship because we recognize that in doing so, we will have life to the full, and, like the man in the Gospel, be freed of those spirits that prevent us from becoming persons God intends us to be. We need to be with Him constantly, to charge our divinity from diminishing day by day. I am reminded of the scripture verse: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for whatever you please and you will get it” (Jn. 15:7). 177 N. Main P.O.
