Good to know: The Neighborhood Center is open four days a week, Monday through Thursday, “at least for now.” The hours are also shorter than they had been now, 10:00 to 3:00. This is because of a shortage of volunteers at the Center. That situation and the shortage of space means that donations – except for food for the pantry – are not presently accepted. (The increased need for food donations results from the diminished deliveries from CAPECO.) Volunteers from the Center will be guest speakers on Tuesday, January 16, at the senior luncheon. $OVRJRRGWRNQRZ7KHFRVWRID¿UVWFODVVSRVWDJH stamp will increase by two cents – to 68 cents – on Janu- ary 21. Here’s hoping that good news FRPHVWRHYHU\RQHUHDGLQJWKLV EMS It looks like there’s a chance my days in EMS may be over soon. Makes me sad. It’s hard enough to make that choice when it’s yours to make, even hard- er when It’s being made for you. I don’t pretend to know all the complex- ities of what’s transpired between the “Powers That Be” in Morrow County concerning the ambulance service, but I can sure feel WKH H൵HFWV DQG LW GRHVQ¶W feel very good. I’ve been in EMS going on 14 years…. starting out as a driver and quickly learning I wanted to be in the back more than behind the wheel. That decision led to some in- teresting rides, and some rather rough ones. Have those midnight page outs and sleepless nights been ZRUWK LW" 0RVW GH¿QLWHO\ As an EMTI in Gilliam County, then Boardman and Heppner for Morrow County, I’ve come away with some pretty awesome memories. Listening to my First Responder son sing a Bing Crosby song to an elderly patient who said it made the trip worthwhile. Singing Christmas Carols in July to a terminal patient at her sister’s request. Vis- iting a 35-year-old patient that you and your daughter successfully resuscitated a few days earlier and see- ing the gratefulness in his wife’s eyes. Those were the moments I’ll never forget. There are also some memories that will stick with me that sometimes I wish wouldn’t. The look on a man’s face when he UHDOL]HVKLVZLIHLVJRQHDQG all you’re doing for her now is in vain. The knowledge that the young boy you’ve just handed over to Life Flight will be told very soon that his mom didn’t make it. The motorcycle rider that didn’t make the corner but the music he was listening to moments before still plays on. And there is nothing that hits you harder than watching the faces of your fellow EMS crew dealing with the loss of one of your own. Those things change you. They’ve changed me….and I hope the changes remain. I never want to lose my apprecia- tion for “normal life”. Or for those times when things work, it all comes together, people get better, and you come back to the station knowing you’ve made a dif- ference. It seems like there are so many things in this life that have questionable value. How many times we wonder if what we’re doing LVZRUWKWKHWLPHDQGH൵RUW But, for me, when I’m in the back of the ambulance…..I know that I know…..it’s a good thing to do. I will miss that. It’s hard to move on from something that’s been such a huge part of your life, and I pray I don’t have to. I really hope that those decision-makers who have the power to make or break our local ambulance service listen to those on the JURXQGÀRRULQFOXGLQJWKH people we serve.
