For the Church, Christmas continues, and immedi- ately after Christmas day, we celebrate the feast of the Holy family because Christmas is a family feast and God comes to us in the family. Today, every family can look up WRWKH+RO\IDPLO\DVWKHPRGHOIDPLO\7KH¿UVWUHDGLQJ RIWKHGD\LVWDNHQIURPWKHERRNRI*HQHVLV 3) wherein we see Abraham being blessed by the Lord for obedience to God. This reading should increase our trust in God. Abraham simply believed that his ancestries would be like the sand of the sea and the stars of the sky, God would multiply his descendants. He was advanced in his age. As was his wife, Sarah. But they believed in God undoubtedly. Their lives should become an example for all of us at this particular time when we are faced by war and uneasiness around us. The Gospel of the day is from Luke (2:22-40), which de- VFULEHVWKH-HZLVKWUDGLWLRQRISXUL¿FDWLRQDIWHUDFKLOG¶V ELUWK%HLQJWKHIHDVWRIWKH+RO\)DPLO\ZHVKDOOUHÀHFW on the lifestyles of Joseph and Mary. &RXSOH LQ &RPPXQLRQ ZLWK WKH /RUG The ordinary life of Joseph began with the struggle for his daily bread. He set up his carpentry and worked day in and day out. Mary also worked without sparing herself in order to keep her house in good condition and to help Joseph. She turned the millstone and carried water. She washed, cooked, swept, and sewed. But she did everything with her motherly love. Although Mary and Joseph were busy with their daily chores, both of them found time to be with the Lord. I am sure we are all busy with our daily activities. 'RZH¿QGWLPHWREHZLWKWKH/RUGDVWKLVFRXSOHZDV" With numerous tasks of the day, they never failed to be in communion with God. Their work and prayers went side by side. )RUJLYLQJ&RXSOHV This Holy family was the poorest, most modest, most silent family in that miserable village of Nazareth. In Nazareth, there was a group of people who came around Joseph and Mary’s family and looked up to them as a model family. But there was another group who sneered at them. They tried to annoy and lay snares for them. They gathered around Joseph with gossip and calumny and urged him to retaliate, even to speak about the pregnancy of Mary. But Joseph, a strong descendant of David, would always just shake his head, looking at Mary and Jesus. If the argument became heated, Mary’s eyes could brim with tears of pity, and Jesus with rightful authority would intervene and cut the discussion short, “…we must forgive! Forgive, not once but seventy times seven.” Many of our existing family issues can be exter- minated or eased if our married couples have the mind and heart of Joseph and Mary. Couple Spent Time Together: Holy family was not VSDUHGIURPWKHSUREOHPVDQGGL൶FXOWLHVRIGD\WRGD\ life. But their love, prayers, devotion, and commitment in life and work kept them united. They, in the midst of troubles, smiled at those who looked at them despairing- ly and prayed for them. We can mold our family thusly. Children and youth have shared with me that they are QRWJHWWLQJVX൶FLHQWDWWHQWLRQORYHDQGFRQFHUQIURP their parents. They would wish to be born again as some electronic gadgets (cell phones, laptops, etc.) because nowadays many parents, after their day of work, spent too much of their time with gadgets instead of with the family. -HVXVZKRLVGLYLQHWKHVRQRI*RGPDGHÀHVKZKHQ+H grew, began helping His Father Joseph and Mother Mary according to His own capacity. Jesus at the age of twelve attracted everyone by His concentration in prayer and meditations on the Scriptures. The questions He asked, the remarks and comments with which He illustrated His narratives astonished everyone. The baby Jesus of Bethlehem invites every one of us today to be like Him, always obedient to the parents and to live life as He lived and showed to us. He was always interested in doing the will of His Father. In our present-day society, if the chil- dren are obedient and respectful of their parents and the parents attentive to our children, we can also make our families after the example of the Holy Family. Holly Rebekah Lodge will be starting the New Year with a bang, only on New Year’s Eve. They will be holding their regular din- ner and BINGO with some changes for this month only. The Lodge is asking every- one to bring an appetizer of their choice to share for this non-alcoholic celebration. In exchange for this, there will be no charge for the meal this month. The cost ilant community member intervened just in the nick of time, preventing the truck from reaching the cemetery. Realizing their mistake, the driver had no other option but to reverse the entire length of Chase Street.
