The Mustangs defeated Ontario, Umatilla, and Riverside showing their skills and teamwork on the court. The Mustangs are FRQ¿GHQW LQ WKHLU DELOLWLHV and camaraderie and are eager to keep their winning streak going. The Mustangs have dominated the BMC Con- ference so far, winning all six of their games. They have also climbed the OSAA ladder and reached the fourth position in the 2A state rankings. On Monday, 12/18/2023, they will play against Riverside at home at 6 pm. On Tuesday, 12/19/2023, they will trav- el to Dufur High School to face the Rangers at 6 pm. Come and support them with your cheers and ap- plause. The Heppner High School boys’ basketball team won two of their three games last weekend at the Columbia River Clash held in Umatilla. The Mustangs ORVWWKHLU¿UVWJDPHRIWKH tournament to the 4A Ontar- io Tigers 49-46. They then beat the Ione/Arlington Cardinals 62-37 and the Irrigon Knights 68-43 to win the Consolation Cham- pionship. In the game against Ontario, Heppner led 14- 13 at the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs struggled to score in the second quarter and trailed 24-20 at halftime. Heppner was again outscored in the third quarter and trailed 39-30 as the fourth quarter started. The Mustangs rallied and took the lead in the game with a little over a minute to go. Ontario hit a three from deep in the corner to take the lead back with only seconds left in the game. Heppner then turned the ball over but then got it right back from the Tigers. Heppner had a good look at the end of the game to tie the score, but the ball hit the rim and bounced away. 7KH ¿QDO VFRUH ZDV in favor of Ontario. Leading the way against the Tigers was Caden George with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Mason Orem had 11 points and 3 rebounds while Marty Medina had a good game with 6 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals. In the Consolation Championship game against the Irrigon Knights, Heppner once again started out on fire and raced to a 22-11 lead at the end ¿UVWTXDUWHU7KH0XVWDQJV outscored the Knights 21-5 in the second quarter to lead 43-16 at the half. Heppner had the Knights doubled up at the end of the third quarter 54-27. They then finished the game with a running clock and the entire roster getting to play in the fourth quarter. The next week on Monday, December 18, the Mustangs will host the Riv- erside Pirates with the JV girls starting at 3 pm and the varsity boys starting around 7:30.
