The two cross-country runners secured impres- sive wins, with Greenwood coming in nearly a minute before second-place Nathan Hammond of Riverside in the men’s 5000 meter. Meanwhile, Nichols was the only runner in sight as she sprinted for the finish in the women’s’ 5000 meter. All the Heppner runners finished strong, securing the women second place as a team, while the men placed fourth as a team. Heppner’s Arianna Worden and Riley Archer also found individual spots on the podium, placing ALL NEWS AND ADVERTISEMENT DEADLINE: in the top six. The middle school runners also saw a busy day in their 3000-meter races. Individually, the boys fell into the middle of the pack, but ended up placing fifth as a team. The Heppner girls didn’t field enough runners for a team score, but all fin- ished strong, with fifth-grad- er Hadlie Duncan narrowly missing her own spot on the podium with a seventh-place finish. CALL TODAY (877) 390-0458 Mustangs lose first game of season to Lost River The Heppner Mustang Football team lost their first game of the season to the Lost River Raiders by the score of 20-6. The Mus- tangs (3-1) finished up their pre-season schedule and will start Blue Mountain Conference play this Friday night when they welcome the Irrigon Knights to Les Payne Field. In the game against the Raiders, Nick Wenberg had a 16-yard kickoff return to give the Mustangs good field position. Heppner then scored on their very first possession of the game. An 11-play drive that was start- ed with a 19-yard scamper by Landon Mitchell and then was highlighted by a 22-yard pass completion from Mitchell to Mason Orem, led to Caden George running the ball in for a touchdown from 5 yards out. The early score by Heppner made it 6-0 mid- way through the first quar- ter. Heppner kicked off to Lost River and they went on their own 10-play drive which resulted in a touchdown. The score was then tied 6-6 at the start of the second quarter. The Mustangs were forced to punt the ball away on their next possession. Lost River then ran the ball and ate up the final seven minutes of the half when they scored again to make it 14-6 at halftime. Another long and time-consuming Raider drive that the Mustangs finally stopped near the end of the third quarter gave Heppner the ball back. The Lost River defense stiff- ened and forced a Mustang punt. The teams traded possessions until Lost Riv- er scored again midway through the fourth quarter. That made the score 20-6 in favor of the Raiders. The next Mustang drive ended and the ball was turned over to Lost River who then ran the game clock out and won by the score of 20-6. The Mustangs had 216 total yards of offense. They ran the ball for 115 and had 101 passing yards. Lost River had 393 total yards and 323 of those were rushing yards. They had 70 yards passing the ball. Mitchell was 7-16 passing the ball for 101 yards and he had one pass intercepted. Orem caught 3 passes for a total of 38 yards, Hayden McMahon had a catch for 33 yards and Cameron Proudfoot had 3 receptions for 30 yards. Leading the team in rushing was Mitchell with 56 yards on 7 carries. Caden George had 9 carries for 37 yards and a touchdown while Hayden McMahon gained 13 yards on 4 car- ries. Cameron Proudfoot rushed the ball for 9 yards on 2 carries. On the defensive side of the ball, Cameron Proudfoot led the team in tackles with 12. Mitchell followed with 9 tackles and Orem had 7. With 6 tackles each in the game were Ca- den George, Landon Mc- Mahon and Owen Guerra. Recording 5 tackles each were Wenberg and Jaime Cavan. Hayden McMahon finished with 2 tackles for the Mustangs. The Mustangs played one of the toughest pre-season schedules in the state and are now looking forward to conference play.
