Greg Smith -Contributed Photo SALEM, OR—On Dec. 9, the Joint Emer- gency Board voted both to increase the federal funds capital construction ex- penditure limitation by $404,000 for the Modified Record Fire Range at the Rees Training Center and to increase the other funds expenditure limitation for the Department of Pub- lic Safety Standards and Training by $1,280,000 for two additional basic police courses. “This funding was passed to increase public safety efforts in the State of Oregon,” said Rep. Greg Smith (R-Heppner). “As co-chair of the General Government Subcommit- tee of the Joint Emergency Board, it was my pleasure to spearhead additional public safety measures in District 57 and the State of Oregon.” Smith is currently serving his 11 th term as an Oregon State Representa- tive, making him the lon- gest-serving member in the House of Representatives. He holds a gavel as the Co- Chair of the Joint Ways and Means Subcommittee on General Government. Rep. Smith also serves as the Co-Vice Chair of the full Joint Ways and Means Committee. December at Willow Creek Terrace has started off with a full house—not the kind that might be a winning hand in a poker game, but the kind that refers to every apartment being rented. Residents and staff view this as great in many ways: new sto- ries, views and ideas; more birthdays to celebrate; more participants for some of the activities. Bob Stevens, formerly of Hardman, moved in a month ago and was soon joined by another “newbie” when Virginia Peck moved to the Terrace from near Lexington. This week they will be putting together two gingerbread houses that will be on dis- play in the common/dining room–tempting passersby to take a bite or a swipe of frosting? They have hosted one group of carolers so far and hope for more. Yester- day, they decked the halls and common/dining room, so every apartment has a holiday decoration by its door, and they now have a tree in place for Santa’s use when he brings gifts for everyone while they sleep after their Christ- mas Eve gathering. That is when they listen to “The Night Before Christmas,” read with dramatic flair, and sing Christmas carols while enjoying their cups of hot chocolate. Their tra- ditional Christmas feast on Christmas Day will have just enough time to become a great memory before their traditional New Year’s Day feast on Jan. 1. Another special day falls amid the holiday-re- lated events, when Sta- cie O’Brien celebrates her birthday on the 20 th . She will choose her birthday lunch menu and invite her neighbors to enjoy the spe- cial day with her. More residents and fewer staff members mean little time for the care as- sistants to relax, as they re- main focused on providing excellent assistance to all of the Residents. Shopping reward cards are available from local businesses and can be used to enter drawings at the event. The Neighborhood Center will be doing a raf- fle, and the Heppner El- ementary Parent-Teacher Club will be putting on a bake sale to raise funds. Heppner City Council has open position The City of Heppner has announced it has a councilor position open for placement. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have lived within the Heppner city limits for at least 12 months as of January 9, 2023, and be registered voters in the State of Oregon. Gift wrapping will take place in Heppner on Mon- day, Dec. 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 127 Main Street. The Boardman event will be at the SAGE Center from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 20. Wrapping services are by donation, with a limit of Elks sponsor free- throw contest compete separately in three A free-throw shooting contest for girls and boys ages eight through 13 will be held at the Heppner Elementary School gym on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m. Girls and boys must be within that age group as of Apr. 1, 2023, and live in the Heppner, Lexington and Ione area. The contest is sponsored by the Heppner Elks and is free for partic- ipants. Girls and boys will age groups: eight to nine years old, 10 to 11 years old and 12 to 13 years old. Each competitor will shoot 10 free throws, then rest and shoot 15 more, for a total of 25. Winners from each age group will ad- vance to the district Hoop Shoot in Heppner on Jan. 8.
