SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 26 , 2022 Win over Prospectors gives Mustangs shot at BMC championship The Heppner Mustang football team won another Blue Mountain Conference (BMC) game by beating the Grant Union Prospectors (GU) by the score of 14-0. The win sets up a game for the BMC championship against the Umatilla Vi- kings this Friday night at Les Payne Field. The game with GU was played in a cool and steady rainfall that probably kept the teams from showing off their true talents on the field. The teams traded pos- sessions throughout the first quarter and neither team could score. In the second quarter, GU mounted a long drive and looked as if they were going to score. They drove the ball to the Mustang five-yard line before the Heppner defense stiffened and held the Prospectors on downs at the 11. The Mustangs took over and went on a 12-play, 89-yard drive that resulted in a score when Ty Boor ran the ball in from one yard out for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was no good, and the Mustangs led 6-0. On the next GU pos- session, David Cribbs inter- cepted a pass that ended the first half with the Mustangs leading 6-0. The Heppner defense held the Prospectors on their first drive of the sec- ond half and forced a punt that was fielded by Cam- eron Proudfoot. Just four plays later the Mustangs would score again when Caden George took a hand- off and blasted through the line and sprinted 69 yards for a touchdown. Boor scored the two-point conversion to make the score of the game 14-0. The next GU posses- sion ended when Cribbs picked off another pass to stop a Prospector drive. The teams continued to trade possessions for the rest of the game and the Mustangs came away with a 14-0 win. Heppner amassed 242 total yards in the game and limited GU to only 110. The Mustangs had no passing yards on the night and all their yards came on the ground. George led the team in rushing with 152 yards on 17 carries. Boor was next with 40 yards on 12 carries and Saul Lopez carried the ball four times for 33 yards. Hayden McMahon gained 15 yards on the night and Proudfoot two. The defense had a bend-but-don’t-break at- titude all night and did a great job in not letting the Prospectors score. The de- fensive charge was led by Jaime Cavan, who recorded eight tackles in the game. With seven tackles each were Boor, Tucker Ashbeck and Cade Cunningham. George finished the game with six tackles and Lopez had five. Proudfoot had four tackles on the night, Jake Lentz three and with two each were Cribbs and Hayden McMahon. Friday night will be senior night, the night when the senior players and their parents will be honored for all of their hard work during their time in the Mustang football program.
