EIGHT - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 14, 2022 Heppner Varsity Volleyball plays in Dufur tourney By Tylynn Cimmiyotti The Heppner varsi- ty volleyball team traveled to Dufur on August 1 to play multiple teams. Up first against the Mustangs was Dufur High School. This is a 1A team ranked 54 (at the time of this writing). Coach Mindy Wilson describes this match as a struggle for the team to get started, but the girls were able to pull together to get the win. Heppner vs. Dufur Final scores: 25-19, 25-12, 25-16 Stats: Dara Teeman: Assists-7 Katie Wilson: Kills-3 Hallee Hisler: Kills-5 Ava Gerry: Kills-6 Morgan Cutsforth: Digs-6, Kills-5, Aces-2 Katie Spivey: Digs-8, Kills-2 Hailey Wenberg: Digs-16, Aces-3 Makiyah Christian: As- sists-9, Ace-1 Keeley Nairns: Block-1, Kill-1 Heppner then played St. Paul High School. This team is also a 1A team but ranked near the top at the 6 spot (at the time of this writing). During this game, Coach Wilson says the girls had an eye-opening experience with such a well-rounded, big-hitting team as St. Paul. Their team is made of tall and fundamentally sound play- ers. The Lady Bucks never missed a beat, which made it hard for the Mustangs to gain momentum. After the first loss, Heppner measured their success by meeting goals made for the following two sets. Photo by Mindy Wilson Heppner hosts East vs. West JV/V volleyball invitational By Tylynn Cimmiyotti It was an early Saturday morning start to Heppner JV and Varsity games that would fill the entire day Sept. 2. The Culver varsity volleyball team played the first game and the last game of the day, meaning they were around for 12 hours of volleyball. East teams invit- ed to play this weekend were Weston-McEwen and Grant Union, alongside Heppner. West teams in- vited to play were Culver, Kennedy, and Vernonia. Heppner played against three good teams this weekend, only losing one match and winning two. The team was able to get some quality touches in and is still smoothing out the wrinkles in their line- up, but the Coach knows that is what pre-season matches are for. The first game for Heppner vs. Culver was Heppner vs. St. Paul the match to watch. Before Final Scores: 8-25, 16-25, this weekend, Culver was 18-25 unranked since this was Stats: their first weekend to play. Heppner JV vs. Grant Union: Lost. It was a quick morning as the teams were playing ahead of schedule. The JV team got plenty of playing time since there were no subs on the bench. First up, the Mus- tangs competed against the Redsides. They were met with some tough compe- tition from the 1A team ranked at the 20 spot for their class. The Mustangs had a slow start to the match and could never recoup. S. Wasco was hitting well, and Heppner could not get the momentum to swing their way. Next, the Mus- tangs were up against the Cougars for their second match of the night. Echo is a 1A team ranked 27 in their class. After losing the first match, the girls re- grouped, showing drive and determination. They pulled together, playing a better game as a whole team against Echo. Coach Wilson was happy to see the team find their groove. They will be building upon that “groove” as the season progresses. Mustangs varsity volleyball team traveled to Helix to play in a tournament. The teams who played this weekend were: 3A schools: McLoughlin High (34), Riverside High (38), 2A school: Heppner High (16), 1A schools: Sherman County High (16), Imbler High (31), Cove High (35), Griswold (He- lix) High (37), and Prescott High from Idaho. During pool play, the Mustangs won all matches against Cove, He- lix, and McLoughlin. During bracket play, the Mustangs won two out of three matches, taking second place in the tournament. “We had a great day even though it didn’t end how we wanted. They did a lot of great things as a team, working hard and battling through the tough times.
