Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, April 13, 2022 -- SEVEN Mustangs host home golf tournament Mustang baseball and softball hosted a combined seven games this week By Blake Carter The Mustang golf team has been competing all month, placing highly as a team at multiple tourna- ments. This weekend the golf team had the chance to play on a course that they are very familiar with. Seniors Cody Fletcher, and Derrick Smith help lead the team, along with ju- niors David Cribbs, Landon Mitchell, Paul Linsday, and Adan Guerra. Freshman John Lindsay rounds out the group of seven boys. Senior Harley Anderson is also competing on the women’s side of the golf tournaments. Each tourna- ment, the Mustang boys take their top five scores out of the seven competitors, their combined score is then placed into the team competition. Last Thursday the Mustangs had a great tournament and look to continue their success this season. Heppner, Oregon was very busy all week with high school competition. Heppner Mustang soft- ball and baseball are al- ready competing in very important league games early in the year. Baseball and softball are dominated by league games and fea- ture very little non-league matchups. Early in the sea- son both teams are battling league contenders and the outcome of these contests could play huge roles in the end of season league standings. Heppner baseball start- ed their week last Tuesday as they hosted the Grant Union and Prairie City co-op team. The Mustangs pulled out a gritty 3-0 victo- ry to move to a perfect 4-0 in league play. Heppner has won their last four games behind stout pitching from their two headed monster, junior Tucker Ashbeck and senior Toby Nation. Ash- beck and Nation each threw a complete game shutout in the double header win last week, and the two com- bined for their third straight shutout as they took out Grant Union/Prairie City. The two also have tremen- dous help from their de- fense in the field. The Mus- tangs kept the Prospectors at bay until they were able to capitalize and score two runs in the fourth. Heppner loaded up the bases with no outs after a couple singles, and a bunt. Karver Wilkins sent a fly ball into right field that would score a run for Heppner, Jake Lentz would ground out in the next at bat, but scored a Mustang runner from third to make the game 2-0. Heppner tacked on another in the sixth, Kason Cimmiyotti pounded a ball to the second baseman that would score Cameron Proudfoot from third base. Grant Union/ Prairie City had two base runners on in the seventh inning, but Nation shut the door on the Prospectors. Nation struck a batter out for the second out before shortstop Carson Eyenetich snagged a line drive to give Heppner the win. The Mus- tang pitching staff allowed just five hits, while striking out nine batters. Also competing last Tuesday was the Heppner softball team who hosted their own doubleheader as they battled the Enterprise, Wallowa and Joseph co-op softball team. The Outlaws are a 3A opponent but fea- ture a tough team. Heppner couldn’t get much going as they fell in back to back games. Friday, Heppner soft- ball hosted the Grant Union and Prairie City softball co-op. The Prospectors sat at number one in the OSAA automated rankings headed into the double header. Grant Union showed their talent as they beat Heppner in two games. Heppner baseball rounded out the weekend as they hosted the four team co-op that consists of the Sherman County, Condon, Arlington and Wheeler High Schools. Heppner was able to go 2-0 against the Huskies. Heppner ten runned Sherman in the first game as Tucker Ashbeck and Caden George com- bined to strike out nine and allow just one run. Toby Nation was efficient at the plate as he batted in three runs, George also batted in two runs as the Mustangs won 11-1. Game two was much of the same, Heppner shut out Sherman 10-0. This time Nation and Karver Wilkins combined to allow no runs in five innings of combined work. George was efficient at the plate once again, batting in three runs this game. Kason Cim- miyotti also hit two runs in. Wranglers playdays start this weekend Wr a n g l e r s R i d i n g Club 2022 playdays will be starting this weekend.
