By Blake Carter After their first contest, Heppner baseball looked to continue their success as they hosted the Baker/ Powder Valley co-op team. The softball team took the diamond for the first time this season, as they hosted the Baker/Powder Valley co-op team as well. Thurs- day afternoon was a busy day for all Mustang teams on the diamond. Heppner baseball lost two tough games to Baker, 7-2, and 18-8. The first contest was controlled by the Baker pitching staff. Heppner did take an early 1-0 lead but that quickly di- minished. The second game was a shootout, Heppner took an early three run lead before Baker jumped back in front. Heppner took the lead again and held it until the seventh inning. Baker came to bat in the top of the seventh down 8-7, the Bulldogs tacked on a run and tied the ballgame at eight. Heppner couldn’t get their bats going in the bottom half of the inning, so the game went to extra innings. Baker jumped on the Mustangs and scored 10 runs to finish off the game. The Mustang softball also fell in two games, the lady Mustangs kept the first game close before taking a tough loss in game two. Heppner softball would spend a couple days of their spring break on the dia- mond as well, as they host- ed the Vernonia Loggers and the Knappa Loggers for two tough double headers. Vernonia and Knappa got the better of the Lady Mus- tangs as Heppner couldn’t find a win on the weekend. Both teams will look to grab a pair of wins this weekend in two double- headers. The baseball team will take on league oppo- nent Union, on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. The soft- ball team will also face a league opponent in Weston McEwen on Friday at 2 p.m. All four contests will be in Heppner this week- end.
