(Heppner). Mustangs visit Enterprise and Union By Blake Carter Heppner traveled over the mountain for their only overnight trip of the season. Both the girls’ and boys’ varsity teams were looking to bounce back after a tough weekend. Friday night Hep- pner stepped onto the court with the Enterprise Out- laws, who they faced only 10 days ago. The Lady Mustangs looked to grab a huge victory over the Out- laws, while the boys looked to gain some footing. The Lady Mustangs ran into a buzz-saw Fri- day night as the Outlaws looked dominant in a 57-33 victory over the Mustangs. Enterprise got out to the early lead in the first quar- ter behind hot three-point shooting. This early lead would only grow as the game progressed. The Mustang boys worked past a shaky start on their way to a big 71- 27 victory over the Outlaws. The game started off very competitively as Enter- prise kept the game close, Heppner only led by five halfway through the second quarter. At that point the Mustangs would explode as they throttled down on the Outlaws. A manageable 24-19 deficit quickly turned into a 51-19 deficit as Hep- Do You Have Something to Share? From that point on it was a 20-8 run to finish out the convincing victory. Saturday the Mustangs took the trip from Enter- prise, over to Union for an- other pair of pivotal games. Union girls sit atop the BMC Standings, while the boys’ team is right on the Mustangs’ tails after a mas- sive win vs Stanfield the previous night. The Lady Mustangs never gained any footing as Union erased Heppner with a 66-19 win. The game started off with an early Union lead and that lead only rose as the Mus- tangs were left in the dust. The Mustang boys team fought off an incred- ibly scrappy Bobcat squad for a 61-49 win. This game swung back and forth all game, the biggest factor of the first half was foul trouble. Two Bobcat start- ers found themselves with three fouls in the first half, keeping both players out for much of the half. Hep- pner got out to an early lead; however, Union never fell too far back. Heppner built an eight point lead at halftime. Late in the game Union made a big push to bring the game to within one point. Heppner continued to battle as they drowned out the ruckus Bobcat fans to extend the lead back out and finish off the game with a big win. This weekend the Mus- tangs will play their final two regular season games. The boys team currently sits as the number one seed, after Stanfield suffered a second league loss. If Hep- pner wins out, they will take a first-round bye, and automatically play for the District Championship, which also guarantees the Mustangs a spot in the state playoffs. After suffering two tough defeats the Lady Mustangs will focus on fighting for the last spot in districts. Heppner will play the two other teams fighting for the last spot and control their own fate this weekend. Heppner will face Weston McEwen in Athe- na on Friday, before hosting Pilot Rock on Saturday. These games -will be se- nior night, as the girls will honor their two seniors, and the boys will recognize their seven seniors. Games begin at 3 on Friday, and 1 on Saturday, with varsity games, and the senior night ceremonies set before each varsity contest.
