Concrete can be
damaged by ice melt
It is common knowl-
edge that rock salt will dam-
age concrete sidewalks and
driveways. However, what
is not well known is that
all ice-melts can damage
concrete.
Although concrete
sidewalks and driveways
look very solid, concrete is
actually a porous material
that can and does absorb
water. In cold weather the
snow or ice is a solid and
does not penetrate into
concrete. But, when ice
melts are applied to snow
or ice, the melting ice/snow
is turned into a salt/water
mix and is absorbed by con-
crete. When temperatures
reach 25 degrees the water
refreezes in the concrete
causing pressure that can
create a pit or spall in the
surface.
Freshly poured con-
crete is the most suscep-
tible to spalling damage,
which would include all
the sidewalks just poured
in the Chase and Gale street
areas of Heppner. The city
suggests shoveling all that
you can then add sand and if
you must, a very thin layer
of rock salt. Other types of
ice melts may offer lower
melting temperatures but
likely will cause a chemical
reaction that is the same
effect or worse as rock salt
in damage to the concrete
sidewalks.
