A community send-off was held for our boys on Friday morning, when they were escorted down Main Street, accompanied by sirens and cheers. The boys then con- tinued on to Eugene and ended up taking third place as a team for the 1A/2A Boys. Saturday morning brought many showers and cool winds. By the time the boys stepped up to the starting line, the course was caked with mud. This was no barrier for the Mustangs, however. Trevor Nichols led the pack, who ended up placing third as an in- dividual. Joseph Sherman chased after him, followed by Edward Ellsworth and Kamron Drury. Before 20 minutes had passed, four out of five of our runners had finished. At this point, Heppner and Culver were competing for third place. As the sun started to peek through the clouds, Roen Waite crossed the line just in time to secure the bronze for the team. “The whole course was muddy and slippery,” said Trevor Nichols, a junior at Heppner High School. “I was tired. My stomach was upset, and I was kind of nervous. Coming across the finish line, I felt a feeling of both relief and discomfort, because I knew that wasn’t my best performance.” The rain proved that every runner would have to push themselves to their limit. “Standing on the podium gave a feeling of accomplishment,” Nichols recalled. “I got to experi- ence what I had been work- ing for the past few years.” This state meet wraps up the entirety of the cross Trevor Nichols (in blue jersey) stands on the podium sporting his bronze medal.
