Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 20, 2021 -- NINE Ione celebrates homecoming week Ione Community School celebrated home- coming last week and deemed it a huge success. Ione’s students and staff, K-12, were all involved throughout the entire week. The week ended with a win against Condon in volley- ball, a win against Dufur in football and an outdoor homecoming dance Satur- day evening. Different activities were scheduled for every day of the week, starting with Tropical/Travel/Tour- ist Day on Monday and mud wars taking place at the end of high school sports practices. “It was cold and well worth the battle,” a spokesperson reported. Tuesday was Cardinal Pride day with a balloon stomping assembly to end the day. Wednesday was deemed Blast from the Past Day and included Macho Man Volleyball at the as- sembly to end the school day and Powder Puff Flag Football at 6:30 on the football field. Thursday was Pink Out Day, and a noise pa- rade ended the school day. The home volleyball game Thursday night against Condon started at 5 p.m. and everyone was encour- aged to wear pink. A bonfire followed the game. Friday’s events were the homecoming football game with senior night held before the game. Homecoming festivities took place at half time with Cardinal Pride as the theme. On Saturday, the events concluded with the home- coming dance held at the city park. The Powder Puff game ended with the senior/soph- omore team ahead 6-0. “Nobody will remember the score, but everyone will remember the temperature since it took everyone quite a while to warm up,” said Superintendent Kevin Din- ning. “Mud Wars was also memorable for the cold. It is disputable who won the evening, but we certainly broke the rope in half at one point. Some took to the mud and cold better than others; Carson E. had no problem taking a couple extra laps in the cold pool,” he continued. The Ione/Arlington volleyball team put on a great performance for the Pink Out. They raised mon- ey for the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and they were able to put Condon away in three. A productive and safe bonfire was well attended after the volleyball game, with the firefighters there to run the fire. The football team was able to focus on football and everything else they had going through a busy week and executed well to beat Dufur 46-6.
