Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 20, 2021 -- SEVEN Mustangs continue their dominance Mustangs improve to 7-0 after road victory at Grant Union By Blake Carter Friday afternoon Hep- pner hopped on the bus and took the road trip over to John Day for an inter- conference battle with the Grant Union Prospectors. Heppner was able to walk away with a 36-12 victo- ry after dominating most of the contest. Heppner produced a whopping 436 yards of offense on their way to a victory. Heppner was able to produce touch- downs on five of their eight offensive possessions. The Mustangs got off to a quick start defensively, forcing a quick three and out. But on fourth down the Prospectors had a high snap on the punt that rolled through the back of the endzone, giving Heppner an early 2-0 edge on the safety. Heppner then received the ball on the ensuing kickoff and took just six plays to advance the ball all the way into the endzone. Brock Hisler capped the drive of with the 12-yard touch- down run. Grant Union immediately put themselves in scoring position as Justin Hodge broke a few tackles on his way to a 62-yard run. However, the Mustang defense stiffened up and kept the Prospectors from finding the endzone. After punishing the Prospectors on the ground, Landon Mitchell dropped back and tossed a touchdown pass to a streaking Zander Fisher to give the Mustangs a 14-0 advantage late in the first quarter. Hisler took the ball and cashed in on a two-point conversion to give the Mustangs a 16-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Another quick Mus- tang stop would give the Mustangs possession on their own 49 yard-line. One play is all it took for Hisler to find paydirt, he took the ball 51 yards for a Mustang score and left them in front 22-0. The Mustangs forced another Prospector punt and looked to score once again, however Grant Union was able to take possession back on a fumble just two plays into the Mustang drive. The Prospector possession would go backwards and would be forced to punt it right back to the Mustang offense. Heppner would make no mistakes as they picked up a touchdown on a 45-yard run from Jace Coe. The Prospector offense would find its groove and push the ball down into the redzone, but Caden George would deny the Prospectors of any points as he inter- cepted a pass to give the Mustangs one last chance before the half ended. The Mustangs were knocking on the door again, but the Grant Union defense would deny the Mustangs any more points as Mitchell’s pass was intercepted as the half ended. After kicking off in the first half, the Mustang offense would hit the field first at the start of the sec- ond quarter. A steady run game would take the Mus- tangs all the way down to the endzone as Hisler added another touchdown run to his name. Hisler would add the two-point conversion to extend the Mustang led to 36-0 and begin the running clock. The ensuing kickoff would be returned all the way to the endzone by Pros- pector running back Justin Hodge, he took the kickoff 86 yards to jumpstart a quiet Prospector offense. Heppner would take nine minutes off the clock as they drove down the field, after being stonewalled on a third down, they attempt- ed a long field goal which unfortunately missed. The Grant Union offense would take the ball for the rest of the game, they were able to add another touchdown as Prospector quarterback Maverick Miller connect- ed with Tanner Fuller on a 37-yard touchdown as the clock ran out, and the famous Prospector cannon fired, signaling another Mustang victory. Stats for the contest; Landon Mitchell threw the ball 13 times and was suc- cessful on six of them for 103 yards and two touch- downs. Brock Hisler lit up the score book with 224 yards on the ground, and three touchdowns. Jace Coe added another 63 yards while Caden George gained 28 yards, Kason Cimmi- yotti also added a run for 10 yards.
