Correction The birth announcement for Arden McCallie Fern Rauch in the October 6 issue of the Gazette-Times re- ported her birthdate as September 21 when it was actually September 20, 2021. Births Send birth announcements to editor@rapidserve.net or upload to Heppner.net. Arden McCallie Fern Rauch Laurence Walter Rill “Lonnie” was born in Hep- pner, on June 24, 1979, as Laurence Walter Ballard and adopted by Cecil Rill when his mother, Molly Rill remarried. Lonnie attend- ed Heppner High School where he was active in football and basketball. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1998 and was medically discharged in 2001. He had one son, Dylan, who was his entire world and they shared mutual passions for sports, music, friends and family. Lonnie spent time in a variety of careers after the marine corps, gathering friends wherever he landed. He was passionate about helping others, particularly veterans and ultimately completed his bachelor’s degree from Western Ore- gon University in 2019 with the goal of pursuing a career in mental health. He had an adventurous spirit, a keen desire to travel and explore and a big per- sonality that made great use of his infectious humor. He remained passionate about sports throughout his life, coached at various schools in Oregon and attended games for his favorite teams whenever possible. Lonnie spent the last ten years of his life on di- alysis and struggling with other health issues. He faced these challenges with toughness and persistence fitting for a Marine and his heart stayed in the fight until the very end. He passed away on Oc- tober 4, 2021, at the age of 42, at his childhood home in Heppner, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his son, Dylan Rill; his mother, Molly Rill and his brother Leland Rill as well as many close friends and family. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The south Morrow County Neighborhood Cen- ter helps neighbors in need by distributing food boxes to local families, provid- ing financial assistance for utilities or rent and gifting clothing and winter coats. In September, the cen- ter distributed 130 food boxes to the families in Ione, Heppner and Lexing- ton. Three families were provided financial help with electricity, one family received water assistance and one family received emergency rent assistance. Five people received cloth- ing and winter coats from the center. The Neighborhood Center recently received a $5,000 grant from the Net- work Support Funds with Oregon Food Bank to help purchase a new energy ef- ficient heating and cooling system for the two food pantry rooms. The Board of Directors is looking for a representa- tive in the Ione area who would like to serve on the board and help those in need in our community. The center is in need of grocery paper or plastic bag donations as they go through them quickly in the food pantry and thrift store. The bags can be dropped off at the center. Donations of gently used sweaters, coats, mittens, scarves, etc. are also needed with the upcoming cold weather approaching.
