By Doris Brosnan Air conditioners and bodies of water. Good news for most of us is that those are available during this heat wave. “Betty Burn’s Birthday Bash at Bucknum’s” makes an eye-catching headline, but in truth, Betty and thir- teen friends just enjoyed lunch and conversation – nothing riotous - at Buck- num’s last Thursday as they celebrated Betty’s 71 st birthday. One celebrant submitted her “good news” as being able to spend time with friends without wear- ing a mask and, even more importantly, “I am still on top of the grass looking down instead of beneath it.” Yesterday, Shirley George hosted lunch for visiting Janet White, previ- ously from Ione, and sever- al of her friends with whom she is visiting this week as part of her long road trip. Kelly Gray can- not praise Maui, Hawaii, enough after her eight-day stay last week. The food was “absolutely amazing,” the people were “kind and laid back.” “Hawaii time and weather are differ- ent,” she said. Kelly and daughter Haven had a great tour guide, too, her sister, Karmin, who has been to the islands several times, and was also accompanied by her twin sons. Kelly said she did not want to get back on the plane, did not want to end her first Hawaiian-par- adise experience. Nancy Propheter has been helping some junior golf players in Heppner with their skills. Now, she is getting busier and bus- ier with her endeavors at the Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick. She is already certified to screen players’ swings, and she is now training during a clinic led by the pro in Kenne- wick, with coaching as a possible end result. The summer reading program at the Ione Library began with a performance of the Dragon Theatre group and has involved 30 young readers who have joined the program so far. At the library, Becky Doherty wel- comes questions and more participants. The Heppner Library has a weekly craft project offered to its young pa- trons, with a preview, some instruction and then a gift of all the necessary com- ponents for each project as a take-home activity. Also, readers are encouraged to keep track of their reading time because that accumu- lated time could earn the reader a prize. Information is available at the library, Tuesday through Saturday. This Sunday, the Ione Church will be holding services in the Ione Park, beginning at 10 a.m. A special choir will include its rendition of the national an- them. Guests are welcome. At the Heppner City Park on July 11, at 5:30 p.m. Music in the Park will feature a Neymark and Sons performance. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy. Good news and a first for Jan Huddleston and Do- ris Brosnan last week was their three-game success against JoAnne Burleson and Nancy Propheter. Yes, those opponents won twelve games, but the H&B twosome felt inspired, since previously they felt lucky to win one game in twelve. Both HHS and Ione basketball teams had good enough seasons to be in- cluded in the final statewide tournaments that concluded last weekend. Interestingly, both boys’ teams won one game each and lost two, being eliminated, and both girls’ teams won two and lost one each before being eliminated. Strong accom- plishments teams. Also, last weekend featured the high school wrestling finals. Three HHS wrestlers qualified for the event: Brian Collins won two matches before being eliminated, Roen Waite won one before having to wrestle teammate Col- lins and being eliminated. But Jace Coe wrestled in the championship match and brought home the sec- ond-place medal. Congrat- ulations to all.
