Good News Only By Doris Brosnan I hadn’t processed the sights and sounds of heavy equipment I saw near the intersection of Center and Chase Streets, so I was sort of startled when I turned north on Chase from May last week. Yes, pavement is now being removed from Chase, as the long-term project progresses. Apparently, the next stage of improvements on Gale Street has begun this week: sidewalks. (My dog and I will appreciate these.) As City Manager Cutsforth noted, “DEstruction is be- ing replaced with CON- struction.” The usefulness of the remodeled Gilliam-Bisbee building was again evi- denced last week, at the HHS National Honor Soci- ety induction of new mem- bers, with lunch following. Such a nice, well-planned facility. Congratulations to the new members. Mahaley Huddleston, daughter of Mark and Jan, has been elected president of Austin Junior Forum, a non-profit volunteer orga- nization supporting women, children and the elderly in the Austin, TX area through community service and fundraising. Mahaley has been a member since 2015 and looks forward to lead- ing the organization this year and giving back to her community, surely a value she learned while growing up in Heppner. Tori Lovgren and Kyle Nicol exchanged wedding vows last Saturday at the Lovgren ranch. Beautiful in her custom-made wed- ding gown, Tori joined Kyle for their first dance as husband and wife, but they soon grabbed up one of her boot-tapping nieces and then one of his nieces as they continued the dance as a foursome. “Elegant” describes the wedding, says one of the 300 guests, and especially endearing was the gift of quarters with the handmade card in a hand- made envelope from a very young guest. The couple will enjoy a trip away later, when their jobs allow. Bobbi Angell’s 76 th birthday celebration on Sunday added to the fes- tive weekend enjoyed by her Lovgren clan, daughter Bobbette’s family, and after her favorite banana cake with whipped cream, she celebrated most of the day helping with the after-wed- ding cleanup. If she counts her age with friends, not years, JoAnne Burleson is much older than the 90 years she celebrated on Monday in the city park with local and out-of-town guests. (Of course, she planned to be on the tennis court the next morning.) No sooner had the ‘21 HHS seniors walked across the stage and flipped their tassels than Mr. Morgan’s Math 095 class ventured up to the “H” hill behind the rodeo grounds and re- arranged the white rocks from 21 to 22. Looks good, new-seniors.. Great news for every- one who wants to go swim- ming: See the ad in today’s paper. And good news for Heppner library patrons is that late fines are a thing of the past, and past fines will be wiped from the books. Remember: even if our library does not have a copy of a book you want, the book can usually be or- dered from another library in the Sage system and be ready for you to pick up almost before you can say thank you. This will allow the childcare facility to develop programs and hire qualified personnel while at the same time offering scholarships and other ben- efits to the communities’ families. Also, the board recently hired a manager and a teacher, both highly qualified. Interested? Con- tact heppnerdaycareinc@ gmail.com to get details.
