HHS graduation Heppner High School’s Class of 2021 graduation ceremony will be held June 5, 2021, at 2 p.m. in the HHS gymnasium. School staff will be available at the Heppner El- ementary School gym from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday to accept gifts and cards for the graduates to gather after their ceremony. Celebration of Life Heppner resident Joann Burleson will celebrate her 90 th birthday on June 14. She was born in Colorado in 1931 and spent her working years in Canby, OR. She moved to Heppner in the late 90’s and has been ac- tive in the community ever since. A relative told the Gazette-Times, “She loves Heppner.” No party is planned due to Covid, but her family Joann Burleson intends to visit and help her celebrate. On a recent blustery Tu e s d a y o n H a r d m a n Ridge, several members of the Willow Odd Fellows Lodge held a work party at the historic Hardman Cemetery in preparation of Memorial Day weekend. Lawn mowers, weed eaters, and tractors with bush-hog mowers moved in and in short order had the cem- etery looking ship shape. Jim Swanson helped out at Lodge members donating the cemetery cleanup day in their time, equipment and Hardman. Grant to receive coaches’ association award Longtime Heppner ath- letic director and coach Greg Grant will receive the 2021 Oregon Athlet- ic Coaches Association’s (OACA) Dave Johnson Contributor Award on June 6 at Eastern Oregon Univer- sity in La Grande. The award has been given the past 20 years for coaches in recognition of time they have served and contribution toward state and local athletic programs and service to the OACA. Grant’s teams have won state titles in 1992, 2015, 2019 and finished second in 2007, 2014. Grant has been the head football coach at Heppner since 1990. He has been the golf coach since 1990 and the athletic director since 2000. fuel were Frank Osmin, Al Osmin, Steve Puntenney, Joe Perry, Jim Swanson, Roger Britt, Kelwayne Haguewood and Tommy Wolff. The IOOF Hardman Cemetery is under the care and maintenance of Willow Lodge #66 of the Indepen- dent Order of Odd Fellows, and has graves dating from 1888 to the present. Several century-old gravestones have very decorative and unusual inscriptions, with many pioneer families in- terred there. In an effort to clean up derelict properties in prepa- ration of new construction in the south county area, WCVEDG has also institut- ed a new grant program for demotion and abatement of as asbestos discovered. The grants can also be used for extension of existing utili- ties to a new home site. The final grant program offered by WCVEDG has been the Community and Public Enhancement grants. These grants are for local organizations, clubs, spe- cial districts or government entities for improvements to the communities. Some of the organizations that have received these grants are City of Heppner, Hep- pner Day Care, Heppner Little League, Heppner Community Foundation, Heppner Cemetery Dis- trict, Oregon Trail Library District, Ione Booster Club, City of Ione, Ione Booster Club, Town of Lexington, Lexington Grange, South Morrow County Neighbor- hood Center and the Four Corners Snowmobile Club. Also, in housing devel- opment WCVEDG recently completed construction and is currently renting out two town house style duplexes in Heppner and is nearing completion and ready for renters in a duplex in Ione. WCVEDG also recently purchased 23 acres in the Heppner city limits above Rock Street and is seeking funding to develop 13 1 - ½ acre lots that will have broadband, city sewer and water, paved streets and sidewalks and views. Board members of WC- VEDG include Kim Cuts- forth, chair, Nancy Snider, vice chair, Marcia Kemp, secretary, Kraig Cutsforth, treasurer, and Jeff Bailey, Ed Rollins, Darrell Green and David Sykes, directors. Sykes and Snider were also recognized for each having served over 25 years on the WCVEDG board.
