TEN - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 24, 2021 Mustangs maintain perfect record The Heppner Mustang football team ran their re- cord to a perfect 3-0 with a 35-16 home win over the Grant Union Prospectors (GU). The Mustangs had also defeated the Prospec- tors 35-0 just two weeks ago in John Day. A good- sized crowd was on hand to witness the first home football game in a long time and the atmosphere was electric. The Mustangs are still playing without all-state running back/line- backer Blake Wolters who suffered an injury after the first Grant Union game. Heppner kicked off to start the game and traded possessions with the Pros- pectors early in the quarter. It wasn’t until there was just under five minutes left in the quarter that the Mustangs scored their first touchdown. An eight-play drive that was highlighted by two pass completions from Jayden Wilson to Jace Coe for 37 yards ended in a score when Wilson ran the ball in from 13 yards out. Conor Brosnan kicked the extra point to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead. The Prospectors were unable to move the ball on their next possession and the Mustangs took over deep in GU territory. It took only four plays for the Mus- tangs to score again when Wilson took the ball around right end and powered his way in on a 9-yard touch- down run. Once again, Brosnan kicked the extra point to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead. On the next Grant Union possession, Mustang cornerback Coe intercepted a GU pass and ran it in 33 yards for another Hep- pner touchdown. Jackson Lehman scored the 2-pt. conversion to give the Mus- tangs a 22-0 lead as the first quarter ended. Brosnan kicked off to start the second quarter and the Prospectors went on a 15-play drive that ate up eight minutes. The Heppner defense finally stopped the Prospectors on downs at the 16-yard line and took over. They traded possessions with Grant Union to end the half with the score 22-0. On the next play from scrimmage, Wil- son handed the ball off to Brock Hisler who got some great blocking up front and then he busted through the line and sprinted his way into the end zone for a 42- yard score. That made the score of the game 28-0 just thirty seconds into the half. The Prospectors fum- bled the ball on their next possession and Hayden Hyatt recovered it at the GU 30-yard line. On the very next play Lehman scored as Wilson found him open and hit him on a 30-yard pass completion for the touchdown. Brosnan made another extra point kick that made the score of the game 35-0 as the third quarter came to an end. Grant Union scored twice in the fourth quar- ter against the Mustang reserves to make the final score of the game 35-16. Heppner had 279 yards of total offense in the game and Grant Union 212. Coe had a run from scrimmage for seven yards and Lopez had one carry and lost a yard. Lehman and Hisler led the defensive effort for Heppner with eight tackles each. Mikel Jaca was next on the team with seven tackles and Brosnan record- ed six. With five tackles each in the game were Coe and Tucker Ashbeck. Coe also had an interception and scored on the play. Cody Fletcher and Blane Ma- honey each had four tackles and with three each were Hyatt, Roy Collins and Kason Cimmiyotti. Lopez finished with two tackles and with one each were Boor, Proudfoot, Blake Carter and Jake Lentz. The next scheduled game for the Mustangs is this Saturday against the Weston-McEwen Tiger- scots. Former feed store torn down The Lott Building was knocked down Tuesday to make room to build a new building. -Photo by Bobbi Gordon. The former Green’s Feed Store (Lott Building) was demolished Tuesday morning in preparation for a new building to be built on the site. According to Kim Cutsforth, the building was actually a stable previously and had no structural integ- rity to allow it to be remod- eled. Allstott Construction will build a building that looks very similar, but “will not sway in the wind,” Cutsforth told the Gazette. The store front sign that was uncovered a few months ago will go to the Ag Museum where it will be installed on the new shop building.
