Sheryll Bates hands over the
director’s reins
Sheryll Bates is hand-
ing over the reins as execu-
tive director of the Heppner
Chamber to Lori Roach.
Her official retirement date
will be July 31 but she will
stay on through the end of
the year to assist with train-
ing and to handle Willow
Creek Valley Economic
Development Group (WC-
VEDG) projects. At the end
of the year, WCVEDG will
revisit the plan and decide
if Sheryll will stay on or if
Lori will take on the duties.
Sheryll told the Gazette
that she will be moving to

Report
A View from the Hill
By Doris Brosnan
The residents and staff
at Willow Creek Terrace
viewed the cancellation of
last month’s rocking-chair
fundraiser for Alzheimer’s
research with sadness, but
for their protection as the
Covid-19 infection rates
surged, cancellation was
deemed necessary. How-
ever, the community on
the hill was certainly able
to enjoy their July 4 th cel-
ebration. The annual Lions
Club fireworks display was
enjoyed as they added pa-
triotic songs and ice cream
treats to the event. Carrying
the celebration of Ameri-
ca’s freedom through July
are the patriotic-themed
wall hangings residents
have created (featured on
their Facebook page).
July continues to be a
favorite month on the hill,
as several days feature ice
cream treats. For instance,
on the 19 th , they will hold an
ice cream social and the ice
cream cone’s 116 th birthday
will be properly celebrat-
ed on the 25 th (and again
on September 22 because
disagreement surrounds its
nationally assigned day).
And maybe Donna Berg-
strom made sure that ice
cream was included in her
menu choices on her birth-
day. Donna celebrated with
her neighbors today. Happy
birthday Donna.
Next week will feature
Disneyland trivia, as its 65 th
anniversary is acknowl-
edged on the 17 th . On the
14 th a Homerun Derby will
put the Terrace’s balls and
bats to work while the MLB
either celebrates its 91 st All-
Star game or delays it for
Covid-19 reasons.
July’s morning discus-
sion topics will include
Fathers and Daughters (7 th ),
the Woody Wagon (18 th )
and Horses, the Moon,
Fathers-in-Law (30 th ). Res-
idents will be invited to
create a fair-and-rodeo dec-
oration based on a wooden
horseshoe, to be featured
on their hall walls in Au-
gust. And a special, secret
event will pay tribute to
Gorgeous Grandmas on
the 23 rd . Discussion might
possibly surround lunch
on the 25 th since that is on
the calendar as “Act Like
a Caveman” day and the
menu will feature some
uncommon dishes.
In June, the Terrace
entered the Phase 1 stage of
reopening in Oregon, which
means that residents are
allowed to go out, although
no visitors are yet allowed
to go into the Terrace. Ad-
ministrator Nairns reports,
however, the residents have
opted to avoid leaving the
facility as the numbers of
normal. Since October, the
water year precipitation
at Heppner has been 8.19
inches, which is 4.53 inches
below normal.
The outlook for July
from NOAA’s Climate Pre-
diction Center calls for
below normal temperatures
and near normal precipi-
tation. Normal highs for
Heppner during July are
85.7 degrees and normal
lows are 53.9 degrees. The
30-year normal precipita-
tion is 0.33 inches.

Father Joseph Thankachan shared this quote after taking
photos of the deer at the door to the church. Psalm 42... As a
deer for a stream of comfort and rest... come to me all of you
who are tired from your daily labor and work to take some
rest... I will give you rest...
