Elementary and mid- dle school students from Heppner participated in the 2020 Regional Chess for Success Tournament in Hermiston last week. Players also attended from Baker City, The Dalles and Hermiston. Heppner did not have enough middle school stu- dents for a team but Journey Cavan-Harris and Delilah Sauceda earned a total of six points. Journey will at- tend the state tournament as the sixth-grade champion. The Heppner elementa- ry team earned 19 points for first place and will be attending the state tour- nament. Elementary team players were Joe McMas- ters, Mary Ashbeck, Jasper Hanna, Avia Panky-Bote- fuhr, Maxwell Von Gunten and Ketch Fennern. Joe McMasters earned first-place in the fifth-grade category and Jasper Hanna and Mary Ashbeck tied for first in the K-4 category. The state tournament will be held in Portland, OR on March 13 and 14. “The Little Way of St. Therese,” written by Fa- ther Gerald Condon, will be presented March 8 at 3 p.m. at the Ione Community School and on March 12 at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Heppner. Admission is free, donations accepted. Saint Therese was born in France in 1873 and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in May of 1925. With a steel will, she struggled wit the church authorities to be permitted to join the convent at Lisieux. Church law did not permit a person so young to make such a serious commitment. She was refused by the Mother Superior, went to the local Bishop, and was denied. Not daunted, she went to the Pope. The rest is history. Her approach to holiness was the “Little Way of Spiritual Childhood.” She was affectionately known as “the Little Flower.” Father Condon has been writing and produc- ing plays for over 25 years. Many of the cast members participating in this year’s production were in his orig- inal productions. It is a rou- tine comment among cast members and production crew, “You can’t say no to Father Condon.” DEADLINE: MONDAYS AT 5PM The Ione School Dis- trict was recently awarded $24,366 from the Columbia River Enterprise Zone II (CREZ II). Port of Morrow Commissioner Marvin Pad- berg presented the check to Ione Principal Rollie Marshall, who thanked the CREZ II Board for its gen- erous donation. Marshall said Ione will use the funds to further upgrade technology in the Ione schools. “For a small school district like ours, having a source of funds like this is really positive,” Marshall said. Money disbursed from CREZ II was collected in 2019 in accordance with agreements made with var- ious businesses and the CREZ II Board. The Co- lumbia River Enterprise Zone II was established in 2009 after the success of the Columbia River Enterprise Zone I. Enterprise zones offer a unique resource for Oregon communities, providing benefits for both businesses located within an enterprise zone and the region surrounding it.
