Donations will build house in Kenya In December, in Hep- pner, there is nothing more comforting on a cold eve- ning than to wrap your- self up in a hand-made quilt. And as you read this perhaps that is just what two sisters or two brothers might be doing right here in our town. In December, in Maua, Kenya, however, there is nothing for two sisters to wrap themselves in. The older one may be seven or eight and the younger one may be three or four. They live on the streets, behind a pile of trash, and they are orphans. The 8-year-old is solely responsible for the care or the 4-year-old. She dives through the trash each day to find something to feed her little sister, and at night all they have to hold is each other. They can only wrap themselves in each other’s arms and hope to Stepping into care. Foot care is essential for people at every stage of their lives. Such is the reality that is played out each day in an area of Kenya that sees poverty beyond anything we can imagine here. And it is a story that people here in Heppner are hoping to change. Strike that: will change. The Heppner United Methodist Church (HUMC) is once again part of a team heading to Maua, Kenya, next August. The church will be giving donors an opportunity to become new owners of a quilt hand made by Cara Osmin, who hopes to be on the team next sum- mer, and led by Rev. Jim Monroe, of the Heppner United Methodist Church, and his wife Rev. Sue Owen. For every donation of money given towards the $3,500 it will take to build a house in Kenya, the donor will have opportunity to en- ter a drawing for the quilt. The Kenya Volunteer Mission team will, in turn, take that money and, from start to finish, build a two- room house (turn-key) for children who have lost their parents and grandparents Rev. Jim Monroe displays the quilt to be raffled. who have lost their chil- dren (hence no retirement income of any sort). The house will not have elec- tricity or running water because none is available. But it will be built of wood and stone. It will be, for a needy child raising younger siblings, a “quilt” that will last them a lifetime. This will be the third house in Maua funded com- pletely by the Heppner UMC. It will join with the 600 or so other houses built Community lunch menu Hopeful Saints volun- teers will serve lunch on Wednesday, December 4 at St. Patrick’s Senior Center.
