The Mustangs are 8-0 and currently the second ranked team in the latest OSAA 2A Football Rankings. It’s always tough to play in John Day, but this year the Mustangs started the scoring off quickly and never looked back. The Mustangs kicked off and, after forcing the Prospec- tors to turn the ball over on downs, they scored just two plays later when Jayden Wilson passed the ball to Kannon Wilkins 19 yards for the score. The touch- down made the score 6-0 just two minutes into the game. It didn’t take long for the Mustangs to get the ball back again. Mason Lehman tackled a Grant Union player and forced a fumble that Jace Coe recovered. Just four plays later the Mustangs scored when Wilson ran the ball in from one yard out for the touchdown. Wilson then threw to Jackson Lehman for the 2-pt. conversion to make the score 14-0. On the ensuing Hep- pner kickoff, the Prospec- tors ran it all the way back for the score to make it 14-6. After Grant Union kicked off, the Mustangs went on a 10-play drive that resulted in a score when Wilson threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Wilkins. That gave Heppner a 20-6 lead with three minutes left in the first quarter. Stepping into care. Foot care is essential for people at every stage of their lives. After a 49-yard pass play to Jackson Lehman, Wilson ran the ball in from three yards out for the score. Wilson then completed a pass to Jackson Lehman for the 2-pt. conversion to make the score 28-6 as the second quarter started. Early in the quarter, Jason Rea tackled a Pros- pector player so hard that he fumbled the ball. Rea then recovered the ball to give the Mustangs great field position. They couldn’t do anything with it and the teams traded possessions several times after that. It wasn’t until Grant Union fumbled the ball again deep in their own territory and Gavin Han- na-Robinson recovered it to give the Mustangs the ball back. On the very next play, Wilson threw to Ma- son Lehman for an 11-yard touchdown. That made the score of the game 34-6 at halftime. Grant Union kicked off to start the second half and it only took two plays for the Mustangs to score again. Wilson completed a pass to Mason Lehman who then took it 54 yards for the touchdown. Wilkins kicked the extra point to make the score 41-6 only 50 seconds into the half. Once again, the Pros- pectors took the kickoff back for the touchdown to make it 41-12. The teams spent the rest of the third quarter and most of the fourth trading possessions until Grant Union scored again late in the game. That made the fi- nal score of the game 41-18. Heppner had 135 yards rushing the ball and 200 yards passing for 335 yards of total offense. Grant Union finished with 213. Wilson was 12-19 pass- ing the ball for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Ma- son Lehman caught seven of those passes for 107 yards and one touchdown. Wilkins had two catches for 29 yards and two scores on the night. Jackson Lehman had a catch for 49 yards and with one catch each were Brock Hisler for 12 yards and Blake Wolters for three. Mason Lehman led the team in rushing with 59 yards on four carries and a touchdown. Wilson rushed for 40 yards and scored two2 touchdowns while Wolters packed the ball 12 times for 22 yards. Hisler had three carries for 14 yards in the game. The defense was led by Hanna-Robinson with 11 tackles on the night. Jason Rea was next with 10 and with seven each were Mason Lehman and Roy Collins. With five5 tackles each in the game were Wolters, Wilson and Jackson Lehman. Finish- ing with three tackles each were Matt Orem and Kevin Rea. With two tackles each were Kellen Grant, Conor Brosnan and Hisler. Coe and Kason Cimmiyotti both had one tackle in the game for the Mustangs. Heppner will finish up the regular season at home with a game this Friday night against the Stanfield Tigers at Les Payne Field. It is senior night so the ten senior players and their parents will be recognized before the game.
