SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, August 14, 2019 New MCSD Board Chair sworn in Barney Lindsay Becky Kindle Richard Cole By April Sykes Barney Lindsay, Lex- ington area, was sworn in as the Morrow County School Board Chair at the board’s first meeting of the 2019-20 school year Monday night at Heppner Elementary. He succeeds Becky Kindle of Heppner who has served as chair for the last four years. Richard Cole was sworn in as vice-chair. The entire board was also sworn in by the new chair. At the meeting, Su- perintendent Dirk Dirksen presented a timeline for the upcoming district bond levy which will go to a vote in May of 2021. A bond levy meeting between the board and ar- chitects, the DLR Group, discussing the vision for district-wide workshops is planned for this September. Advisory workshops are planned in Boardman in October 2019, Heppner in November, Irrigon in Jan- uary 2020 and then again in Boardman and Heppner in February and March of 2020. A presentation of the draft will be held in Irrigon at the April 2020 board meeting and community listening sessions with the DLR Group are planned in each community in May 2020. An advisory work- shop by DLR is scheduled for September 2020 and the final presentation to the board is planned for the Oc- tober 2020 board meeting. Community presentations are planned for January, February, March and April 2021 before the bond goes to a vote in May 2021. In other business, the board: -approved the Heppner softball facility lease agree- ment. -adopted the 2019-20 Board Goals; -adopted a resolution naming bank signers. -accepted and appropri- ated unanticipated revenues consisting of $2,000 to A.C. The public is encour- aged to practice safe camp- fire principles when recre- ating in dispersed and de- veloped campsites. Forest officials recommend the following campfire safety precautions: -Campfires should be in fire pits surrounded by dirt, rock or commercial rings and in areas not conducive to rapid fire spread. All flammable material shall be cleared within a three-foot radius from the edge of the pit and free of overhanging material. Use existing pits wherever possible. -Campfires must be attended at all times and completely extinguished prior to leaving. MONDAYS AT 5:00 P.M. The intent of this recommendation is to ensure individuals with a campfire to have the tools necessary to completely extinguish their campfire. The public’s awareness of the current fire danger and cooperation is essen- tial to a safe fire season. Recreationists, firewood cutters, hunters and other forest users can all help by closely adhering to restric- tions, operating safely and cautiously and keeping up to date on the latest orders and regulations.
