TEN - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 29, 2019 Girls to hold raffle Halvorsen to check out after 28 years If you can read, thank a teacher. If you can find something to read, thank a librarian. The Ione School librarian, Cathy Halvors- en has helped countless students find something to read, but she is “checking out” as she retires at the end of the school year after 28 years. Cathy began working at the Ione School in the fall of 1991 as the special education assistant, hired by principal Dick Allen, and working with Kar- en Smith-Griffith. When the opportunity arose to work in the library, Cathy thought it sounded like a great idea. She has served in that capacity for the past 16 years. Students in Ione are always anxious to return to school in the fall to see how Mrs. Halvorsen has decorated the library. Themes ranged from su- perheroes, pirates, jungle, under the sea, outer space, monsters, aliens, sports, 50’s diner, and Cathy’s favorite, the Wizard of Oz. Another highlight was the annual book fair held each fall for 12 years during parent-teacher conferences. The book fair was well supported by the commu- Cathy Halvorsen is set to retire at the end of the school year. nity, and teachers and the library received numerous books for the young people to enjoy. Highlights of Cathy’s days are reading picture books to the primary stu- dents, encouraging reluc- tant readers to find the per- fect book and visiting with students before school. Cathy says she can’t walk down the hall without a student saying, “Mrs. Hal- vorsen, I brought my book,” or “Mrs. Halvorsen, I forgot my book,” or music to her ears, “Mrs. Halvorsen I love my new book.” And she laughs, once in a while the familiar, “The dog ate my book.” Those aspects of the job will be difficult to leave behind, but she is looking forward to spending time with the other important children in her life, her three granddaughters: Ziya, 12, Tru, 10 and Eila, 6, of Henderson, NV, where son Ryan and his wife Mollie reside. Her daughter Allison and her husband A.J. are in Portland where Allison is a teacher in the Portland Public Schools. During retirement Cathy and her husband Frank hope to visit national parks around the country. She is getting a head start celebrating by traveling with a group of old high school friends, affectionately known as the “farm chicks,” for an adventure to the Grand Canyon this fall. Cathy has also worked placing foreign exchange students for 28 years and will continue her work with the ASSE foreign exchange student program. Ione has had at least 60 exchange students at the high school, Local girls Kylie Boor, Madi Orem, Alex Cavan and Hailey Wenberg of Columbia River Heat (14U ASA softball team) are raf- fling off two Post Malone Party Pit tickets for Whis- key Fest in July.
