Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, October 31, 2018 -- FOUR Middle school cross country continues to dominate The boys’ and girls’ middle school cross country teams recently competed in the Eastern Oregon Cham- pionships in Pendleton. This new meet combines all middle school teams from eastern Oregon into one race. The divisions include a fifth/sixth-grade race and a seventh/eighth- grade race. On the girls, side, both Lily Nichols, second, and Sierra Greenup, eighth, made medal finishes in the fifth/sixth-grade race. David Cribbs and Keegin Chitty also finished in the top 100, with Saul Lopez, Ty Boor and Caden George close behind. On the girls’ side Lily Nichols, Alex Ca- van and Zandra Masterson all cracked the top 100 with Sierra Greenup finishing well also. The boys and girls Mustang cross country teams competed at the dis- trict meet in Pendleton on Friday, Oct. 26. The boys competed against 11 teams in the combined 1/2A com- petition, while the girls had 14 teams in their combined 1/2/3A race. Only the top two teams and five individ- uals overall can qualify for the state meet. On the boys side there was tough competition against the number one state ranked Union team and the sixth ranked Stan- field Tigers, but the boys ran well claiming a second place team finish and se- curing a team entry into the state meet on Nov. 3 at Lane Community College in Eu- gene. The Union boys team won the meet and Stanfield was a distant third. Top individuals on the boys’ side were Hunt- er Nichols in third place, Hayden Qualls in ninth and Colt Parker rounding out the podium in 10 th place. Close behind were Trev- or Antonucci in 11 th , Leo Waite in 12 th , Tyson Vawser in 14 th and Christian Dubry in 18 th . The boy’s second place total score was 45, which was 41 points better than number three Stan- field. The girl’s team also had a tremendous day. Although there were no state qualifi- ers, the team finished in a strong and surprising fourth place, in one of the toughest districts in the state. Unfor- tunately, the girls have to compete against 3A teams as well which made their task difficult as they were in second place among 1/2A teams. Top finishers for the girls included Madelyn Nichols 17 th , Mackenzie Heideman 22 nd , Sarah Knop 31 st , Hanna Finch 36 th , Ky- lie Boor 38 th and Hannah Palmer 55 th . Next up for the boys is the state meet this Saturday, Nov. 3. The boys come in ranked third in state in the coach’s poll and are hop- ing to earn a state trophy. Hunter Nichols is ranked third individual in the state, but several other Mustang runners have a shot at the podium as well. Mustangs wrap up championship The Heppner Mustang football team wrapped up the championship of the Blue Mountain Conference with a convincing 51-12 win over the Stanfield Ti- gers. The Mustangs are 7-2 overall and finished con- ference play a perfect 4-0. They will move on and host a state playoff game against the Kennedy Trojans on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. The Trojans (7-2, 4-2) are the third place team from Special District 2. Against the Tigers, Heppner scored on seven of their ten possessions. Their first score came on only the second play of the game as Blake Wolters took a handoff and ran the ball 40 yards for the touchdown. The Mustangs then scored the 2 pt. conversion when quarterback Jayden Wilson threw to Logan Burright. The score was 8-0 only forty-seven seconds into the game. The Mustang defense then stopped the Tigers and the Heppner offense only needed three plays to score again. On their first play of the drive, Wilson threw to Gavin Hanna-Robinson who ran down the sideline for a gain of 56 yards. Two plays later Heppner scored when Wilson hit Mason Lehman with a 28-yard pass completion for the touchdown. Mason Lehman then ran the ball in for the 2 pt. conversion to make the score 16-0 halfway through the first quarter. The next time Heppner got the ball they went on a six-play, 49-yard drive, that ended in a score when Wolters burst through the middle of the Mustang of- fensive line and ran the ball 30 yards for a touchdown. That made it 22-0 at the end of the first quarter. Stanfield scored the next time they had the ball to make the score 22-6. The teams then traded posses- sions until the Mustangs got the ball back with just over four minutes left in the half. A four-play drive that was highlighted by 19- and 22-yard runs by Mason Lehman, a 20-yard run by Wolters and a 12-yard scamper by Wilson, ended when Mason Lehman car- ried the ball 13 yards for a touchdown. Kellen Grant then kicked off and the ball traveled just over 10 yards. A Mustang player jumped on it to give Heppner pos- session near midfield. On the very next play, Wilson found Mason Lehman open behind the Tiger defense and hit him with a 49-yard touchdown pass. Conor Brosnan kicked the extra point to make the score 37-6 at halftime. The first time the Mus- tangs got the ball in the sec- ond half they only needed five plays to score again. Wilson once again threw a pass to Mason Lehman who scored from 30 yards out. That made the score of the game 43-6 halfway through the third quarter. After a Stanfield punt, Wilson handed the ball to Wolters who raced 54 yards before he was tackled at the eight yard line. On the next play, Hanna-Robin- son ran the ball in for the touchdown. Wilson then scored the 2 pt. conversion to make the score 51-6 with five minutes left in the third quarter. The 45 pt. rule kicked in and the rest of the game would be played with a running clock. The Heppner coaches substitut- ed freely and let many of the reserves and younger players into the game at this point. Stanfield scored on their next possession to make the score of the game 51-12 at the end of the third quarter. The teams traded -See FOOTBALL/PAGE FIVE COLUMBIA BASIN ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE, INC.
