Mustangs win fourth game in a row The Heppner Mustang football team won their fourth game in a row with a 38-2 win over the Irrigon Knights. The Mustangs (4-2 overall, 1-0 BMC) controlled the game from the start and the outcome was never in doubt. Conor Brosnan kicked off for the Mustangs to open the game. Heppner held Irrigon from getting a first down and forced a punt. On the first offensive series for the Mustangs, they put together an eight- play drive that ended with a score when Jayden Wilson ran the ball in from one yard out. Wilson then threw to Mason Lehman for the two point conversion to give the Mustangs a quick 8-0 lead. The Knights then put together a nice drive but it ended when Jackson Leh- man intercepted a pass to give the Mustangs the ball right back. They couldn’t move the ball and had to punt it back to Irrigon. The Mustang defense got the ball back again and then the offense scored when Mason Lehman took a handoff and raced 56 yards for the score. Wilson then dropped back and hit Logan Burright with a pass to score the two point conversion giving the Mus- tangs a 16-0 lead. On the next Irrigon possession, Evan Kollman stepped in front of a Knight pass and intercepted it to give the ball back to the Mustangs. That led to an- other Heppner touchdown as Wilson threw to Mason Lehman in the end zone for a 14 yard score. Mason then caught the two point conversion pass from Wil- son to give the Mustangs a 24-0 lead at halftime. When the second half started, Jackson Lehman intercepted a Knight pass and ran it back 37 yards to give the Mustangs the ball inside the Irrigon 10 yard line. Mason Lehman then scored a touchdown on a five yard run up the middle of the line. Blake Wolters carried the ball in on the two point conversion play to give Heppner a 32-0 lead at this point early in the third quarter. The Mustang defense once again forced a three- and-out of the Knights and the offense scored again right away. A four-play drive that saw Gavin Han- na-Robinson carry the ball for 13 yards, Wolters have two carries for 19 yards and then Mason Lehman took it to the house from 35 yards out for the touchdown. That made the score 38-0 at the end of the third quarter. Conor Brosnan (56) kicks off to open the game with the Irrigon Knights. -Photo by Damon Brosnan. At this point of the game the Heppner coaches began to substitute freely and let the regulars get some rest. The game ex- perience for many of the younger players will serve the Mustang football pro- gram well into the future. Irrigon scored their only points on a broken play by the Mustangs that resulted in a safety. Heppner got the ball back near the end of the game and the Mustang quarterback took a knee two times to run out the clock and give the Mustangs the 38-2 victory. The Mustangs amassed 320 yards of total offense and held Irrigon to 193. The Knights ran 57 plays in the game and Heppner only 39 and Irrigon had the ball for twice as many minutes as the Mustangs. It was the quick strike offense of the Mustangs that proved those statistics meaningless. Wilson was 4-7 pass- ing for 142 yards and a touchdown. Mason Leh- man caught two balls for 60 yards and a touchdown. Burright had one catch for a 61 yards gain and Hanna-Robinson had one reception for 21 yards. Mason Lehman led the team in rushing with 100 yards on just four attempts. He scored three rushing touchdowns in the game. Wolters ran the ball for 68 yards on 17 carries and Hanna-Robinson gained 15 yards on four attempts. Brock Hisler ran the ball one time for a three yard gain. On the defensive side of the ball, Jason Rea led the team with 10 tackles. Wolters and Tyler Carter were next with seven tack- les each and with five each were Hanna-Robinson and Burright. With four tackles each were Keegan Gibbs, Matt Orem and Jackson Lehman. Recording three tackles each in the game were Hayden Hyatt and Mason Lehman. With two tackles each for the Mus- tangs were Wilson, Kollman and Jace Coe. Rounding out the tackles in the game with one each were Charles Ca- son, Jorden Sweeney, Roy Collins, Conor Brosnan and Brock Hisler. The Mustangs will get back into Blue Mountain Conference play this Friday night when they host the Weston-McEwen Tiger- scots at Les Payne Field. The Bobcats battled and got the next two points and won the set 17-15. With that win they also won the match 3-2.
