Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, September 19, 2018 -- EIGHT Mustangs beat Raiders to take Heppner volleyball competes at John Day and Baker City first win of the season The Heppner Mustang football team won their first game of the season by beat- ing the Lost River Raiders with a score of 20-6 at the game played on Saturday at Summit High School in Bend. It was the second game of a double header that saw Grant Union de- feat Gold Beach in the first game 46-8. Heppner kicked off to start the contest and held the Raiders on their first drive. The Mustangs then took over and put together an 11 play drive that ended in a touchdown. Quarterback Jayden Wilson hit Mason Lehman with a pass that covered 14 yards to get the score. The PAT attempt was no good and the Mustangs led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter. The teams traded pos- sessions in the second quar- ter and again the Mustangs went on a long drive. A 10 play drive that ate up five minutes of game time re- sulted in another Heppner touchdown. A 43 yard pass completion from Wilson to Lehman got the ball to near the goal line. Two plays later Lehman blasted through the line for a three- yard touchdown run, giving the Mustangs a 12-0 lead. Lost River got the ball and went on their own long drive. A 15 play drive saw them get the ball to the Mustang seven-yard line as halftime approached. The Raiders attempted to score several times from there, with the last attempt having only three seconds left in the half. The pass attempt fell to the ground incom- plete and the Mustangs led 12-0 at halftime. Early in the second half, Wilson was intercepted and Lost River ran the ball back to the four-yard line. Two plays later Lehman took the ball from Wilson and ran around the left side of the offensive line. He got some great blocking on the outside and tight roped down the sideline for an 81 yard touchdown run. Wilson scored the 2-pt. conversion on a run to give the Mustangs a 20-0 lead at this point. Lost River scored their only touchdown on their next possession to make it 20-6. The teams went back and forth the rest of the game with neither one really threatening to score. Both teams had 15 first downs in the game. The Mustangs had 331 total yards for the game and Lost River 242. Heppner rushed for 214 yards and had 117 yards through the air. Wilson was 8-13 pass- ing the ball for 117 yards. He had one touchdown pass and one pass intercepted. Mason Lehman caught four of those passes for 70 yards with a long of 43 yards. Evan Kollman had two receptions for 36 yards and Wolters had a catch for an eight-yard gain. Jackson Lehman caught a pass from Wilson for three yards. Mason Lehman led the team in rushing with 103 yards on six carries. Blake Wolters carried the ball 12 times for 55 yards and Wilson had 54 yards on 12 carries. Gavin Hanna- Robinson packed the ball three times and gained two yards in the game. Jason Rea led the team with 13 tackles. Hanna- Robinson was next with nine and Wolters finished with seven. Tyler Carter re- corded six tackles and Matt Orem and Wilson had five. Evan Kollman and Ma- son Lehman each had four tackles in the game. Logan Burright was next with three tackles and with two each were Keegan Gibbs, Charles Cason and Roy Collins. With one tackle each in the game were Jack- son Lehman, Hayden Hyatt and Kellen Grant. This Friday the Mus- tangs will travel out of state and play the team from Colfax, WA. The Heppner Mustang volleyball had a couple busy days last week on the court. They first traveled to John Day on Thursday for a Blue Mountain Conference match against the Grant Union Prospectors. Next, they went on to Baker City to stay the night and then play in the Baker Bulldog Tournament. In John Day, the Mus- tangs came off of the bus and started a little slow in the first set losing by the score of 11-25. In the next two sets Heppner played much better and were in both sets to the very end. The Prospectors, who are the defending state cham- pions and still have a ton of talent left from last year’s team, defeated the Mus- tangs in the last two sets by the identical scores of 25-18 and 25-18. It was early in the morn- ing when Heppner got to the Baker High School gym. In pool play the Mustangs lost to the host team, Baker, by the scores of 18-25 and 12-25. They then took on Weiser, ID and Heppner defeated the Wolverines in straight sets 26-24 and 25- 23. The final match in pool play saw the Mustangs split with the LaGrande Tigers. Heppner won one set 25- 18 and LaGrande won the other 25-11. Bracket play began with the Mustangs playing the Ontario Tigers. Hep- pner defeated the Tigers by the scores of 25-13 and 25-10. That win moved the Mustangs into the tour- nament semifinals where they would face off again with the LaGrande Tigers. Heppner lost to LaGrande by the scores of 7-25 and 13-25. The Mustangs day was finished at that point and after spending nine hours in the gym playing volleyball, the team was ready to go home. The schedule does not let up this week for the team as they travel to Mil- ton-Freewater to play the McLoughlin Pioneers on Tuesday. They then start back up in conference play by hosting the Pilot Rock Rockets on Thursday. The team then makes the long bus trip to Enterprise to face the Outlaws and the Union Bobcats.
