Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 23, 2018 Junior High track and field finishes season Odd Fellows do cemetery clean-up Last week 14 mem- bers of Willow Lodge #66 of the I.O.O.F. (Heppner Odd Fellows) met at the Hardman Cemetery to per- form their annual Memo- rial Day clean-up. Lawn mowers, weed-eaters and small tractors buzzed for several hours while the vol- unteers went about mow- ing, trimming and cleaning the grounds of the historic cemetery. A new cemetery sign was hung, with a Columbia Basin Electric Co-Op crew assisting with re-setting the entrance gate posts. Refreshments were served when all the work was completed. Members donating equipment, fuels and time for the day were Frank Osmin, Merlin Hughes, Charlie Anderson, Colin Anderson, Roscoe Qualls, Odd Fellows Brian Kollman and Jay Keithley at the newly re- built Hardman Cemetery entrance. -Contributed photo. The Hardman Cem- etery is under the care and maintenance of Heppner Lodge #66 of the Indepen- dent Order of Odd Fellows and has graves dating from 1888 to the present. Seniors participate in stock market game In September 2017, Mr. John Flaherty required his senior students to compete individually in the Oregon Stock Market Game. The Stock Market Game is an online simulation of the global capital markets that engages students grades four-12 in the world of eco- nomics and prepares them for financially independent futures. Over a 10-week ses- sion, the stock market game teaches students the fun- damentals of personal fi- nance and investing, while practicing skills in math, economics, social studies and other subjects. In the game, students form teams or can compete as individu- als to build and manage an investment portfolio in the real-world, dynamic mar- ketplace. There are award divi- sions for fall and spring elementary, middle school and high school, as well as full-year awards for each category. This year, Alex Lindsay took third place in the full-year high school age division. Alex com- peted against thousands of other students in Oregon and hundreds of teams. Alex is the first student from Heppner to place in this contest. The Oregon Stock Mar- ket Game is sponsored by the Oregon Council on Economic Education, an Alex Lindsay placed third against other students in Oregon. -Contributed photo. all-volunteer board whose mission is to provide young adults with a clear under- standing of basic economic principles and how these principles affect their daily lives.
