For Public/Legal Notices: public/legal notices deadline is Monday at 5 p.m. Dates for pub-
lication must be specified. Affidavits must be required at the time of submission. Affidavits
require three weeks to process after last date of publication (a sooner return date must be
specified if required).
For Obituaries: Obituaries are published in the Heppner GT at no charge and are edited to
meet news guidelines. Families wishing to include information not included in the guidelines
or who wish to have the obituary written in a certain way must purchase advertising space
for the obituary.
For Letters to the Editor: Letters to the Editor MUST be signed by the author. The Heppner
GT will not publish unsigned letters. All letters MUST include the author’s address and phone
number for use by the GT office. The GT reserves the right to edit letters. The GT is not
responsible for accuracy of statements made in letters. Any letters expressing thanks will
be placed in the classifieds under “Card of Thanks” at a cost of $10.

Ione to hold
Baccalaureate
The Ione High School Baccalaureate will be held at
the Ione Community Church on Tuesday, May 29, begin-
ning at 6 p.m.
The Reverend Michael Crouch, interim ICC pastor,
will officiate. The graduates, parents, students, teachers
and members of the community are invited to attend.
Refreshments will be provided by the churches in
the community.

Celebration of life
to be held
A celebration of life
will be held for Dave Zach-
ry at the Heppner city park
on June 3 from noon to 3
p.m. Hamburgers and hot-
dogs will be provided, but
guests are asked to bring a
side dish or dessert. Every-
one is welcome to attend.
The family suggests
donations be made to the
Heppner Booster club.
Cultural grant
proposals being
accepted
The Morrow County
Cultural Coalition, funded
by Oregon’s Cultural Trust
Foundation, is now accept-
ing proposals for the 2019
grant period. Categories for
qualifying groups or proj-
ects are: literary, historical
preservation, visual and
performing arts, or humani-
ties and cultural organiza-
tions.
2018 grants were
awarded to Heppner Art
and Culture Club guest in-
structor, Lexington Grange
building preservation work,
Heppner HS drama club,
Morrow County Histori-
cal Society Chronicles and
Inland NW Musicians/Wil-
low Creek Symphony. Past
grants have been awarded
to quilting and art groups,
historical library books, art
displays, cultural entertain-
ment structures and kid’s
activities for parks.

TX, where he was living. A

Smith was born on Apr.
6, 1928 at Dawson, NM,
the son of Mike and Ruth
Smith.
On Apr. 25, 1957 he
married Nedra “Rosie”
Smith. The couple had four
children; Jamie, Mike, Mar-
ty and Rick. They moved
to Heppner in 1962 when
he took a job at Kinzua
Sawmill, where he worked
until his retirement. Rosie
preceded him in death in
October of 2002.
Kenneth married his
high school sweetheart
Mary Louise Scott on June
9, 2008.
He is survived by his
wife, Mary; children, Jamie
Wise and her husband Casey
of Kingsley, MI, Mike
Smith and his wife Valerie
of La Grande, OR, Marty
Smith and Rick Smith both
of Heppner; sisters, Becky
Smith, and Mozell Allen
and her husband David, 13
grandchildren and several
great grandchildren.
He was preceded in

Community lunch menu
St. Patrick’s Parish volunteers will serve lunch on Wednesday, May 30 at St. Patrick’s Senior Center. Lunch will
be turkey bake with potatoes, broccoli salad, cranberry sauce, spiced pears, hot rolls and pumpkin cake for dessert.
Milk is served at each meal. Suggested donation is $3.50 per meal. Menu is subject to change.

The Ione High School
volleyball team will be
hosting a Cardinal volley-
ball camp for incoming first
through eighth grade girls
June 11–13 at the Ione High
School gym. Incoming first
through fourth graders ses-
sions will be from 8 to 10
