Alex Lindsay is the son of Barney and Kim- berly Lindsay of Lexington. He attends Heppner High School and after graduation, he plans to major in history at the University of Oregon to pursue a career in teach- ing. Lindsay is a member of National Honor Society, FBLA, FFA and 4-H. He has participated and lettered in basketball, cross country and track and field and re- ceived the OSAA Scholar Athlete Award for three years. He has helped with many community activities including being a 4-H camp counselor, Booster Club auction, Mustang Mop Up, Morrow County Fair con- cessions and other various fundraisers. M o rg a n C o r r e a i s the daughter of Mike and Christy Correa of Heppner. She attends Heppner High School and after gradua- tion, she plans to attend Blue Mountain Community College to study account- ing. She has served as a vice-president or president all four years, is a member of National Honor Society, FBLA and FFA. Correa has participated and lettered in volleyball, basketball and softball and received OSAA Scholar Athlete and Tri-Sport Scholar Athlete awards. She has helped in the community and schools by assisting with Mustang Mop Up, Booster Club auction, Red Cross blood drives, St Patrick’s Day walk and the Morrow County Fair auction. Reiah Waite is the daughter of Dieter and Bridget Waite of Heppner. She attends Heppner High School and after gradua- tion, she plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, UT to study el- ementary education. Waite has participated and lettered in volleyball and tennis and received awards for drama and choir. She holds offices, volunteers and is very ac- tive in her church, planning to go on a mission in the near future. Beau Wolters is the son of Kirk and Amy Wolters of Ione. He attends Heppner High School and plans to attend Blue Mountain Com- munity College this fall to study ag science. Wolters is the current student body president and has been an FFA member for four years. He has participated and let- tered in football, basketball and baseball. He volunteers at school and in the com- munity with the Veteran’s Day program, Red Ribbon Week, Red Cross blood drive and helping with many youth athletic camps. Sonia Medina was also the recipient of the Coach Del LaRue scholarship, receiving $1,000. The Coach Del LaRue scholarship was developed in memory of Del LaRue, a long-time teacher and coach at Ione High School. LaRue had a passion for coaching basketball and track and field and loved seeing stu- dents set and achieve their goals. After retiring from teaching, he continued to coach track for twelve ad- ditional years. During this time, he helped many stu- dent athletes achieve their goals and was honored as national Track and Field Coach of the Year. This fund awards one scholarship to a college- bound Ione High School senior based on demon- strated academic achieve- ment, community involve- ment and with preference given to students who have participated in the Ione High School track and field program. Students must be continuing their education at a community college, trade school or four-year college or university. Ap- plicants must have a mini- mum 3.0 accumulated GPA, attended Ione High School all four years of high school and shown involvement in community activities. The South Morrow County Scholarship Inc board of di- rectors awards the scholar- ship on behalf of the family. The board of directors include president Adam McCabe, vice-president Ginger Bowman, treasurer Tricia Rollins, secretary Brandi Sweeney, Martha Munkers, Carri Grieb and Karen Holland. The South Morrow County Scholar- ship Trust, Inc was estab- lished several years ago with the mission to grow funds to provide scholar- ships to graduating seniors from Heppner and Ione High Schools and to take the place of the Troedson Scholarship Fund which will discontinue in 2023. Heppner Elementary will be rounding up all the kindergarten students for the 2018-19 school year on May 22 from 9 to 11 a.m. Parents are asked to contact Mrs. Robinson to pre-register their child for Kinder Roundup at 541- 676-9128.. Each child will meet Mrs. Calvert, tour the school, meet the staff and participate in other fun activities. Parents need to bring their child’s birth certifi- cate, immunization record and emergency contact information to the event. Students must be five years of age on or before Aug. 31, 2018 to enroll at HES. Heppner Elementary to host Kinder Roundup Hunter ed. course to be held A hunter education course, taught by Jim and Darlene Marquardt, will be held June 12, 14, 19 and 21 at the Heppner high school from 6-9 p.m. An additional field day will be held on June 23 at the Lexington Gun Club. Registration is available online at www.dfw.state.or.us or at any POS license agent. ODFW charges a $10 application fee for all hunter education students. Both the girls’ and boys’ golf teams from Heppner High School won titles at the Special District 3, Dis- trict Golf Tournament held at Pendleton Country Club. Both teams have now quali- fied for the OSAA State Championships which will be held at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks on May 14 and 15. The Mustang girls’ team shot a two-day total of 720 to win the district title by an astounding 102 strokes over second place La Grande. Heppner had a 51 stroke lead on the Tigers after day one of the tournament and went out and doubled that on day two. It has been a goal of the Heppner girls team all season long to shoot a total of 350 for a single round. They accomplished that goal on the second day of the tournament by shooting a combined 349. Scores on the second day for the Mustang team were Nicole Propheter 83, Sasha Keown 84, Sophie Grant 88, Claire Grieb 94 and Caitlyn Scrivner 95. For the two-day tour- nament, Sasha finished as the second place medalist overall with a total of 170. Sophie shot a 174 to take third place medalist hon- ors and Nicole had a total of 178 and was the fourth place medalist. Claire was sixth overall with a 198 and the split team of Madison Combe and Caitlyn Scriv- ner had a two-day total of 200. The Heppner boys’ team held a slim 12 stroke lead after day one of the tournament. They were able to stretch that lead out on day two and win by 37 strokes over second place Grant Union. The Mustangs shot a two-day total of 713 to beat Grant Union who followed with a 750. Burns with 759 and Echo with 803 rounded out the top four team spots. Kellen Grant led the team on day two by shoot- ing an 84 and Reno Fergu- son followed with an 88. Logan Burright and Cason Mitchell both turned in scores of 91 while Casey Fletcher carded a 99. Burright finished with a two-day total of 171 to take home the fourth place medal. Ferguson captured fifth place medal honors by shooting a 173. Grant was sixth overall with a 176 and Mitchell had a two-day total of 193. The split team of Gavin Hanna Robinson and Casey Fletcher shot a 202. The girls’ team com- peted against Wallowa, Nixyaawii, Grant Union, Enterprise, Burns, Vale, Nyssa, Ontario, Mac Hi, Baker and La Grande. The boys’ team took on Echo, Burnt River, Nixyaawii, Wallowa, Imbler, Grant Union, Enterprise, Burns, Nyssa and Vale. Ione student awarded Grow Ag scholarship Ione student, Morgan Orem has been awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders program, spon- sored by the Monsanto Fund. The Grow Ag Lead- ers program, which seeks to support students in ag- related fields of study and raise awareness of the job prospects in agriculture, has awarded more than a half- million dollars in scholar- ships to students across the country. Nominated by a farmer in their state, the awarded students can use the schol- arship to pursue an educa- tion in ag-related fields of study, including agronomy, education, engineering and others.
