Faith, love, family and friends have been the anchors in the 70 year marriage of Ernie and Mary Jean. Two of Mary Jean’s brothers, Jerry and Donald (two of the four infamous Bristow boys), were on their way to the wedding when an Ione resident asked if they were on their way to Ernie’s wedding. They responded, no, Ernie’s fu- neral. Over the past 70 years Ernie and Mary Jean and the Bristow boys, along with their spouses, have gathered many times to enjoy fun and laughter to- gether. The new groom replied, no, we just got married. The clerk gave them the honeymoon suite, prompting family and friends to retell the story many times. The couple raised four children: Pam Doherty, John McCabe, Lisa Gifford, and Laurie Wilson. They have been fortunate to love all their sons- and daughter- in-law: Jim Doherty, Sonja McCabe, Joe Gifford, and Dan Wilson. They have 12 grandchildren: Jenni- fer Doherty, Sara Doherty Davis, Marissa McCabe Turner, Michael, Matthew and Mark McCabe, Maisie Gifford Vanderhoof, Lionel Gifford, Emily Harsin Gif- ford Heryla, Jane Wilson, Andrea Hansen and Eric Wilson. John’s children pro- vided them with years of enjoyment watching and supporting Heppner Mus- tang sports. Whenever pos- sible they traveled to watch Pam’s daughters who both pitched softball from age 10 through college. They traveled to Hermiston to watch Lisa’s children in soccer and to Newberg to see Laurie’s children at swim meets, water polo tournaments and lacrosse and basketball games. “They have loved each grandchild for her or his own special qualities,” said a family member. Now they are enjoying their 12 great- grandchildren: Grayson and Merris Davis, Logan and Dylan Rose Turner, Morgan McCabe, Branton, Stetson and Canaan McCabe, Aidan and Dylan Vanderhoof and George and Oliver Heryla. Other than a brief two and a half years liv- ing at Bay City, OR, they have lived their married life in Ione and Heppner surrounded by the family, friends and communities they love. Mary Jean has been heard saying how many long, hard years she and Ernie have been mar- ried, but she is still saying it with a twinkle in her eye and Ernie still grins when she says it. ALL NEWS AND ADVERTISEMENT DEADLINE: MONDAYS AT 5:00 P.M. BEO Bancorp (OTCBB:BEOB) and its subsidiary, Bank of Eastern Oregon, announced first quarter 2018 consolidated net income of $758,000 or $0.64 per share, compared to $801,000 or $0.67 per share for first quarter 2017. Total assets were $393.4 million up 4.4 percent year over year. Net loans of $312.8 million were up 2.9 percent from the same pe- riod in 2017, while deposits were at $349.5 million up 4.5 percent year over year. “2018 is starting off as expected. The Federal Reserve has been bumping up interest rates, which has had a positive effect on net interest margin. This has been offset by a loan loss provision for the quarter of $300,000 compared to no provision in 1Q2017. This is attributed to some year-end and first quarter adjustments brought on by the Tax Cut and Jobs Act. We have also seen another tough renewal season for some of our ag borrowers, which warrants prudent and reasonable allocations to the ALLL,” said President and CEO Jeff Bailey. Chief Financial Of- ficer Mark Lemmon said, “Earnings per share was down slightly year over year, but up slightly from 4Q2017. Shareholder eq- uity is up 6.4 percent over the past year and our return on average assets and return on average equity numbers are solid at 0.75 percent and 9.44 percent respectively, our income taxes are down 36 percent, or $145,000 from 1Q2017, while not a surprise, it is a reminder of the impact of tax reform for corporations.” Chief Operations Of- ficer Gary Propheter said, “The growth in loans and deposits is moderate and coming from all areas of our network. We appreciate the support of our customers and the hard work of our banking team members.” “Spring field work is in full swing. Timely rains help offset the effects of the relatively mild winter. Commodity prices have rebounded a bit from their lows and we remain opti- mistic about the ag sector performance in 2018,” con- cluded Bailey.
