The Arbuckle Nordic
Club enjoyed spring skiing
conditions on their Satur-
day trip Jan. 13. The eight
skiers spent the day skiing
in the Kelly Prairie area.
Kelly Prairie is a preferred
place to start out the ski
season as it boasts fairly
flat terrain and has many
fingers leading away from
the main prairie to explore.
If snow conditions remain
favorable the group will
continue to ski each Satur-
day. They meet at 9 a.m. at
the Heppner City Park and
everyone is invited to join
them. For more informa-
tion, contact Steve Brown-
field 676-9696, Bill Ewing
676-9119, or Dan VanLiew

The Heppner Mustang
boys’ basketball team opened
their conference season with a
pair of wins at home over the
weekend. The Mustangs (7-6,
2-0) beat the Stanfield Tigers
58-40 and then defeated the
Weston-McEwen Tigerscots
by the score of 64-63.
Heppner started the game
with Stanfield by playing some
lock-down defense. The Mus-
tangs led the game 14-2 after
the first quarter. They also led
at halftime by the score of 29-
13. Heppner then exploded for
20 points in the third quarter
to take a 49-25 lead into the
final frame. The Mustangs

quarter and were outscored
15-9 by the Tigers. It was too
little-too late for Stanfield and
the Mustangs came away with
the victory 58-40.
Trent Smith led the team
in scoring with 15. He also
had one rebound, one assist
and a steal. Tyler Carter and
Justin McAninch each scored
10 points in the game. Carter
also had seven rebounds while
McAninch recorded six re-
bounds, one assist and four
blocked shots. Wyatt Steagall
scored eight points, hauled
eight rebounds and had a
steal. Hunter Nichols chipped
in six points, five rebounds,
two assists and three steals.
Kevin Smith finished with four
points, five rebounds, three as-
sists, one steal and he blocked
six shots. Alex Lindsay scored
two points in the game as did
Dakota Howard. Dakota also
recorded two rebounds. Coby
Dougherty scored one point,
had one rebound and an assist
for the team. Beau Wolters
ripped down six rebounds
and had two assists. Gibson
McCurry had a rebound for
the Mustangs.
It was a close game
throughout with the Tigerscots
that came down to a play at the
very end for the Mustangs to
get the win. Weston-McEwen
led at the end of the first quar-
ter 19-15. Heppner battled
back to outscore the Tigerscots
24-14 in the second quarter
to take a 39-33 lead into the
halftime break. The Tigerscots
held the Mustangs to only 10
points in the third while they
scored 18 themselves to take
a 51-49 lead into the final
stanza. Both teams traded
leads in the fourth quarter and
the Tigerscots led the game
by two points with only five
seconds left in the game. The
Mustangs called a timeout
and had possession of the
ball right in front of their
own bench. Coach Jeremy
Rosenbalm drew up a play to
get a score and win the game.
The play worked to perfec-
tion as Carter passed the ball
in to Kevin Smith, who had
posted up under the Mustang
basket. He caught the pass
and scored the winning basket
with only one second left in
the game. Weston-McEwen
attempted a desperation shot
at the buzzer that fell short
and the Mustangs got the win
in the exciting game by the
score of 64-63.
Once again the Mustangs
were led in scoring by Trent
Smith. He poured in 20 points
and also had two assists, two
steals and one rebound. Lind-
say had 10 big points, two
rebounds and an assist. Mc-
Curry scored eight points, had
five rebounds, two steals and
blocked two shots. Carter had
seven points, three rebounds,
two assists and two steals for
the Mustangs. Kevin Smith
scored six points in the game
and also had eight rebounds
and a steal. Wyatt Steagall also
scored six points and ripped
down five rebounds, had two
blocks and a steal. Nichols had
three points, four rebounds,
four assists and two steals for
the team. Wolters pitched in
two points, three rebounds
and a steal on the night while
McAninch had two points,
four rebounds and an assist.
Now the Mustangs hit
the road for their next four
conference games. The team
will travel to Culver and play
the Bulldogs on Thursday, Jan.
18. They will then go over the
hill to battle the Pilot Rock
Rockets on Saturday, Jan. 20.
