The blade and spray rig were on the tractor. Permission to burn was obtained. The fire- starter was trained in pre- scribed burning and as a wildland firefighter. All of the equipment was work- ing and there was no wind. Then a small storm front started blowing in and as the embers began to spot ahead. . .the sprayer broke. We were in trouble. I made two calls before running to fight beside my husband: 911, and my neighbor. Then the wheels of this awesome commu- nity started turning. Be- fore I could even make it to the field with shovels and water and burlap, two police rigs were directing traffic, ranchers and farm- ers were showing up with water tanks, and a passer- by had jumped out of his rig, grabbed one of my shovels, and ran into the smoke. Before I knew it, the Heppner Volunteer Fire Department was there, and the immediate danger was over so quickly, I could hardly believe it. But last week, my kids stood in our driveway and watched your hard-earned money keep a fire from racing toward their neighbor’s ranch, and watched it pro- tect their own house and animals, should the winds have shifted.
