Septem- ber 5, 2017 Published: September 13, 20 and 27, 2017 Fight to end distracted driving Morrow County Sheriff Kenneth Matlack, as part of a grant in conjunction with the Oregon Department of Transportation, announced that the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office is hold- ing programs to discour- age distracted driving. The programs will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. in Heppner and at 1 p.m. in Ione, Friday in Boardman and Monday in Irrigon. “The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office is very con- cerned about distracted driving and is fully commit- ted to the public safety of all our citizens,” says Matlack. Citing a tragedy that oc- curred because of distracted driving, Matlack reports that “Alexxyss Therwhang- er, age 19, was killed in a car crash on February 19, 2016, while she was driving home in eastern Oregon. Alexxyss was using her cell phone and lost control of her car, colliding with an oncoming vehicle and severely injuring two other people. The eight high school players making the trek from Ione to Boardman and back each day are having a great ex- perience and are enjoying tremendous community support for their efforts. As is the tradition in Ione, the American Legion Post #95 presents the colors be- fore every home game. This year they are traveling to Boardman to do the same and coordinating their efforts with the Riverside HS pep band.
