Orem’s artwork was chosen from artwork sub- mitted by 2,163 students from 32 counties featuring Oregon agriculture and natural resources. The win- ning art is published in a school-year calendar and distributed statewide. The contest is open to all Or- egon public, private, charter and homeschool students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Since Oregon produces over 220 different commodities, students have a wide variety of subjects from which to choose. Orem said, “My art- work is of a John Deere combine cutting wheat at sunset. I chose to draw this because I grew up on a wheat farm. I wanted to draw something I was involved with and show Pictured left to right: Northwest FCS Relationship Manager Brett Harrison, League Volunteer Jodi Ferguson, Kacee Lath- The Heppner Little League was awarded a Madison Orem was honored at a reception for Oregon Agricul- $1,000 Northwest Farm ture in the Classroom’s Calendar Art Contest winners. It gives them an opportunity to teach about and discuss the bounty and beauty of Oregon agriculture and incorporate art into their classrooms,” said Jessica Jansen, AITC Executive Director and coordinator for the calendar contest. Each month of the calendar features artwork by one of the winning students and each day of the year has a fact about agriculture. Besides having their artwork published in the calendar, each winning stu- dent received a $50 award and certificate. The artwork of all 13 winners was dis- played at the Oregon State Fair. Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation (AITC) is a nonprofit orga- nization dedicated to help- ing students grow in their knowledge of Oregon’s agriculture, environment and natural resources. AITC provides free educational lessons, activities and re- source materials to Oregon educators to support the integration of agricultural themes into academic sub- jects such as math, science, history and language arts. The group will meet on Sunday afternoons, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. rather than on Thursday nights. Also this year, the club will focus on children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The Cubbie program for pre- schoolers will no longer be offered. The club year will kick off with registration and an ice cream social at Willow Creek Baptist Church in Heppner from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 10. Par- ents or guardians must to be present with their children to complete the necessary paperwork and pay dues, which are $10/year per stu- dent. The AWANA program is the combined effort of five local churches to teach children about the Bible. Games, songs, a Bible les- son and prizes are included during a typical club meet- ing. For more information contact AWANA Com- mander Dale Bates at 541- 676-5773, or go to the Heppner AWANA Club Facebook page. They intend to use the funds to add permanent ir- rigation to their field, which currently has no irrigation in the in-field. Northwest FCS is com- mitted to helping rural com- munities succeed, accord- ing to their news release. In 2017 to date, Northwest Farm Credit Services has committed $156,000 to 115 projects in rural communi- ties across Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Since the program’s incep- tion in 2007, it has awarded 748 grants totaling more than $1.36 million. The next rural grant deadline is Oct. 1, 2017. Final Music in the Park this Sunday Heppner’s Music in the Park program wraps up this Sunday, Sept. 10 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Heppner City Park on Main Street. The final week ends with a performance featur- ing fiddle and guitar music by Eric Jepsen and John Wambeke. Pulled pork sandwiches and all the trimmings will be available for purchase by donation in support of the Shared Ministry’s well drilling projects through Living Water International. In the event of rain, this concert will be moved to the All Saints Parish Hall on Gale Street.
