Mustang boys basketball ends season at
district tournament
The Heppner Mus-
tang boys’ basketball team
had its season come to
an end at the Columbia
Basin Conference tourna-
ment last weekend. The
Mustangs were defeated
by the Weston-McEwen
TigerScots by the score
of 43-41 on Friday night.
With the loss, the Mustangs
finished the season with a
12-7 record and were the
16 th ranked team in the state
out of 42 teams in the final
OSAA state rankings.
Heppner could not buy
a basket early in the game
at the Pendleton Conven-
tion Center. The team got
several good looks at the
basket but just could not
get the ball to go in. They
trailed the TigerScots by the
score of 14-4 at the end of
the first quarter.
Things started to pick
up for the Mustangs in the
second quarter as they out-
scored the TigerScots 10-9.
Heppner trailed at halftime
by the score of 23-14.
It was a tough defen-
sive game in the third quar-
ter as neither team broke points at one point but then was just a little too late
double figures. Heppner quickly fell further behind. as the clock ran out after
Weston-McEwen made a
free-throw to win by the
final score of 43-41.
The Mustangs won ev-
ery quarter in the game but
the first. It turned out to be
just too big a hole to climb
all the way out of. The mo-
mentum of the game had
swung to the Mustangs and
many feel that if they had
had a little more time they
may have won the game.
Logan Grieb led the
team and game in scor-
ing with 13. He also had
2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1
steal in the game. Kevin
Smith followed with 11
points, 12 rebounds and
2 blocked shots. Nikolas
Dias Martins had 7 points,

of 9-5 to pull within five 10 points with just over the team. Lindsay also had
points at 28-23. The game two minutes to go in the 3 rebounds, 2 assists and
opened up a bit in the fourth game. That’s when a furious 2 steals, while Hedman

a total of 2 points and he
also had 2 rebounds. Kevin
Murray had 4 rebounds and
3 steals in the game and
Wyatt Steagall hauled down
5 rebounds.
After the game in a
very sad Mustang locker
room, Heppner coach Jer-
emy Rosenbalm told his
team how very proud of
them he was. He stated what
a pleasure it was to come to
practice every day and work
with such an outstanding
group of young men. He
especially thanked the five
senior boys on the team,
Kolby Currin, Logan Grieb,
Caden Hedman, Jake Lind-
say and Kevin Murray, for
their leadership and dedi-
cation to the program. He
pointed out that this group
has been playing together
since the third grade and has
had much success over the
years and will be missed.
He then challenged the un-
derclassmen in the room to
follow the seniors’ lead and
work hard in the offseason
to make sure the Mustang
team would be back at the
tournament next year.
After many tears, hand-
shakes and hugs the team
exited the locker room to-
gether as a team one last
time.
