Mustangs drop two games in tough week Mustang wrestling
competes in
Redmond tournament
Starting their confer-
ence season off with a pair
of away games against two
of the top teams they will
face, the Heppner Mus-
tang boys’ basketball team
dropped both games last
weekend. They lost to the
Stanfield Tigers 81-66 and
then were defeated by the
Weston-McEwen Tiger-
Scots 53-49.
The highly-anticipated
game against the Tigers
was close in the first half
as neither team led by more
than three points. Heppner
had the lead at the end of the
first quarter 16-15 and then
the scores flipped in the
second. Stanfield outscored
the Mustangs 16-15 and the
game was tied at halftime
31-31.
It was in the third quar-
ter that Stanfield took con-
trol of the game as they
outscored the Mustangs
24-13. It was closer in the
fourth, but the Tigers still
had the advantage 26-22.
That led to the final score
of the game being 81-66 in
favor of the Tigers.
There were 13 lead
changes in the game, with
nine of them being in the
first half.
Leading the way in
scoring for the Mustangs
were Kevin Murray and
Wyatt Steagall with 14
points each. Murray also
had 6 rebounds and 1 steal
while Steagall hauled
down 5 rebounds and had
3 blocked shots and a steal.
Jake Lindsay finished with
12 points, 4 rebounds, 2
assists and 2 steals in the
game. Nikolas Dias Martins
had 8 points, 3 rebounds
and 3 assists for the Mus-
tangs. Logan Grieb and
Caden Hedman also scored
8 points each in the game.
Grieb also had 3 rebounds,
1 assist and 2 steals, while
Hedman recorded 2 re-
bounds, 3 assists and a steal.
Coby Dougherty scored 2
points and had 3 rebounds
and 1 assist for the team.

bound and 1 blocked shot,
Kevin Smith had a steal in
the game, and Beau Wolt-
ers and Hunter Nichols
recorded 1 rebound each.
In Athena, Heppner had
everything going their way
early in the game with the
TigerScots. The Mustangs
led the game at the end of
the first quarter 18-9. Foul
trouble for several of the
Heppner starters forced
them to the bench early in
the second quarter and the
TigerScots outscored the
Mustangs 12-10. Heppner
still led the game at halftime
by the score of 28-21.
Weston-McEwen con-
tinued to chip away at the
Heppner lead as they out-
scored the Mustangs 19-12
in the third quarter to tie
the game at 40-40 as the
fourth quarter started. A
back-and-fourth last quarter
saw the TigerScots score
the winning basket with
just a few seconds to go. A
Heppner foul with only a
second left in the game led
to two made free-throws
by the TigerScots and gave
them the win by the score
of 53-49.
Grieb led the Mustangs
with 18 points in the game.
He also had 4 rebounds
and a steal. Dias Martins
finished with 13 points, 7
rebounds and 1 assist for
the Mustangs. Jake Lindsay
scored 7 points and had 1
rebound and 2 steals on the
night. Smith and Steagall
each had 4 points in the
game. Smith also hauled
down 11 rebounds, had 2
blocked shots, 1 assist and
1 steal while Steagall had 4
rebounds for the team. Hed-
man finished with 3 points,
2 rebounds, 4 assists and 2
steals, while Alex Lindsay
contributed 3 rebounds.
Murray battled for 3 re-
bounds and a steal in the
game for the team.
The conference sched-
ule will be better for the
Mustangs this week as they
have two home games. On
Friday they host the Culver
Bulldogs. The JV games
will be played at the same
time but in different loca-
tions. The JV boys’ team
will play at 3 p.m. in the
elementary school gym.
The JV girls’ team will also
play at 3 p.m., but their
game will be held at the
high school. That game will
be followed by the varsity
girls’ game at 4:30 and then
the varsity boys’ game at
approximately 6 p.m. Both
of those games will be at
Heppner High School.
On Saturday afternoon,
the Mustangs host the Pilot
Rock Rockets. The boys’
JV team will start things off
at 1 p.m., followed by the
JV girls game. The Mustang
boys’ varsity team will play
next at 4 p.m. and then the
varsity girls’ game will fin-
ish up the evening. All of
these games will be played
at the high school.
