Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, January 18, 2017 - THREE Mustangs drop two games in tough week Mustang wrestling competes in Redmond tournament Starting their confer- ence season off with a pair of away games against two of the top teams they will face, the Heppner Mus- tang boys’ basketball team dropped both games last weekend. They lost to the Stanfield Tigers 81-66 and then were defeated by the Weston-McEwen Tiger- Scots 53-49. The highly-anticipated game against the Tigers was close in the first half as neither team led by more than three points. Heppner had the lead at the end of the first quarter 16-15 and then the scores flipped in the second. Stanfield outscored the Mustangs 16-15 and the game was tied at halftime 31-31. It was in the third quar- ter that Stanfield took con- trol of the game as they outscored the Mustangs 24-13. It was closer in the fourth, but the Tigers still had the advantage 26-22. That led to the final score of the game being 81-66 in favor of the Tigers. There were 13 lead changes in the game, with nine of them being in the first half. Leading the way in scoring for the Mustangs were Kevin Murray and Wyatt Steagall with 14 points each. Murray also had 6 rebounds and 1 steal while Steagall hauled down 5 rebounds and had 3 blocked shots and a steal. Jake Lindsay finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in the game. Nikolas Dias Martins had 8 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists for the Mus- tangs. Logan Grieb and Caden Hedman also scored 8 points each in the game. Grieb also had 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals, while Hedman recorded 2 re- bounds, 3 assists and a steal. Coby Dougherty scored 2 points and had 3 rebounds and 1 assist for the team. In Athena, Heppner had everything going their way early in the game with the TigerScots. The Mustangs led the game at the end of the first quarter 18-9. Foul trouble for several of the Heppner starters forced them to the bench early in the second quarter and the TigerScots outscored the Mustangs 12-10. Heppner still led the game at halftime by the score of 28-21. Weston-McEwen con- tinued to chip away at the Heppner lead as they out- scored the Mustangs 19-12 in the third quarter to tie the game at 40-40 as the fourth quarter started. A back-and-fourth last quarter saw the TigerScots score the winning basket with just a few seconds to go. A Heppner foul with only a second left in the game led to two made free-throws by the TigerScots and gave them the win by the score of 53-49. Grieb led the Mustangs with 18 points in the game. He also had 4 rebounds and a steal. Dias Martins finished with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist for the Mustangs. Jake Lindsay scored 7 points and had 1 rebound and 2 steals on the night. Smith and Steagall each had 4 points in the game. Smith also hauled down 11 rebounds, had 2 blocked shots, 1 assist and 1 steal while Steagall had 4 rebounds for the team. Hed- man finished with 3 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, while Alex Lindsay contributed 3 rebounds. Murray battled for 3 re- bounds and a steal in the game for the team. The conference sched- ule will be better for the Mustangs this week as they have two home games. On Friday they host the Culver Bulldogs. The JV games will be played at the same time but in different loca- tions. The JV boys’ team will play at 3 p.m. in the elementary school gym. The JV girls’ team will also play at 3 p.m., but their game will be held at the high school. That game will be followed by the varsity girls’ game at 4:30 and then the varsity boys’ game at approximately 6 p.m. Both of those games will be at Heppner High School. On Saturday afternoon, the Mustangs host the Pilot Rock Rockets. The boys’ JV team will start things off at 1 p.m., followed by the JV girls game. The Mustang boys’ varsity team will play next at 4 p.m. and then the varsity girls’ game will fin- ish up the evening. All of these games will be played at the high school. The Mustang wrestling team traveled to Redmond over the weekend to face off against schools ranging from 1A to 6A in the Oregon Wrestling Classic. The Mustang varsity girls’ team lost the Friday contest 54-45, followed by a Saturday loss to Weston-McEwen 40-52. The losses give the girls a slow start to league play, with a 0-2 league record and 5-7 overall. The girls’ JV team picked up the slack, taking down the Tigers 26- 18.
