EIGHT- Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, May 18, 2016 BRAZELLS SAY GOODBYE -Continued from PAGE ONE ho and moved to Morrow took over directorship. She group.” and moved to Jordan Valley, ID because they “couldn’t stand the rain.” “We decided to get out of there,” says Al. They stayed in Jordan Valley for ive years, where Al worked on a friend’s cattle ranch. While there, they started attending the Methodist Church. “We increased atten- dance by 200 percent,” says Jean. “There were four of us and only two members. The two threw themselves into the church; Al started a Bible study and Jean started a newsletter. “The very next Sunday after it went out, we had 60 people at the service,” she recalls. “We ended up with a really good congregation. Before we left, we even put on a musical.” In 1982, they left Ida- County, where Al worked for Wagontrail Farms as a mechanic for two years. When the machine shop in Lexington went up for sale in 1984, they bought that and ran it until 2006. They started attending the Heppner Methodist Church in 1982, where the two again became instru- mental to the church’s func- tioning. Jean, especially, threw herself into helping with many aspects of the church, especially the choir. “If you have people who are the perfect person for it, you ask!” she says of getting others involved. “That’s always been my philosophy.” When the existing choir director became ill and passed away, Jean, who had a long history of music, including a college minor, also played the organ at times, led the children’s singing and played in the guitar group for the guitar service. As if that wasn’t enough, she took over mak- ing church banners, did the lower arrangements for the Sunday service, ran the St. Patrick’s Day stew feed, and even made the commu- nion bread for many years. When the Methodist church stopped having a full-time pastor, she also served as one of the lay leaders. Both were also heavily involved in other volunteer work, too. “It’s been some inter- esting years. My biggest memory was teaching 4-H,” says Al who, with Merlyn Robinson, led horse 4-H for many years. “My best memories were 4-H. We had 20 kids in that horse Jean also cooked for 4-H camp, where they made everything from scratch. And that doesn’t cover Jean’s political career. In 1999, the town of Lexing- ton need a recorder, and her bookkeeping for the Lexington Machine Shop made her a good it. “That started my po- litical career,” she says. She went from there to being town mayor in 2010. The Brazell’s say that period was interesting, but “The gold star goes to building the town ire hall. That was an interesting experience,” says Al. He adds that he conducted a metal drive to raise money. “I put the word out and all my customers brought in all their aluminum and copper from where they’d thrown them in the corner of the ield.” In 2006, their world changed when Al had con- gestive heart failure and had to sell the machine shop. “Our world came to a screeching halt,” he says. “I couldn’t do that work any more and had to sell out. Their move now comes so they can be closer to their son, a master sergeant in the Army. They have plans to build a house on a parcel of land adjoined to his. Their daughter lives and works in Moses Lake, WA. “It’ll be interesting in a lot of ways. We’ll certainly miss the activities we were involved in,” says Jean, al- though boredom shouldn’t be a problem—among other things, she has already been elected to a road co-op up in Washington. She admits that as she packs boxes, though, it’s dificult to ind things to get rid of in the necessary downsizing. “It’ll be a different lifestyle,” she adds. We’ll certainly miss the area and the people in it,” says Al. “It’ll be an adventure for sure. But our life has been full of adven- tures.” Marriage Licenses The Morrow County Clerk’s ofice has released the following report of marriage licenses: May 10, 2016: -Harley Bruce Young II, 57, of Hep- pner and Toni Lynn Clemens, 49, of Heppner.
