Fundraiser planned for Bennett Memorial Scholarship Community members are invited to save the date for a Ryan Bennett Memo- rial Scholarship fundraiser planned for March 25 at the Heppner Elks Lodge. The event will include dinner and a silent auc- tion. Money raised will go to fund a scholarship in memory of the late Ryan Bennett of Heppner. “While Ryan’s time with us was far too short, we hope to celebrate his life into the future,” said one event coordinator. Bunco ‘girls’ night out’ to beneit Ione preschool Area women are invited to a girls’ night out with an evening of Bunco at the Ione Legion Hall this Thursday, February 18. The evening will begin with a “chat, sip n’ snack” at 6 p.m. The game will begin at 7 p.m.; buy-in is $20. Finger food and lemonade will be provided, but participants should feel free to bring more. The evening will also include prizes, rafles items and a preschool art silent auction. All proceeds will beneit Creative Care Preschool in Ione. Marriage Licenses Honor Flight invites WWII vets on 2016 D.C. trip Honor Flight of Eastern Oregon invites more World War II veterans to travel on Honor Flight trips to Wash- ington, DC during 2016. The nonprofit Bend Heroes Foundation operates Honor Flight of Eastern Or- egon and has honored 505 World War II veterans with free four-day trips to the nation’s capital since 2010. Veterans and their guardians visit the national World War II Memorial and 10 other veterans’ memori- als. World War II veterans are eligible to travel provid- ing they served anywhere in the Armed Forces during World War II, live in any of the 17 Oregon counties east of the Cascades, have not visited the national World War II Memorial in the past, are able to travel and are accompanied by a guard- ian. Full-time medical staff is available during the trip. The use of wheelchairs, walkers and portable oxy- gen by veterans is allowed. Guardians can be family members or friends and must be able to assist vet- erans by pushing wheel- chairs and walking reason- able distances with them. The guardian fee is about $1,250 and covers all ex- penses for the four-day trip. World War II veter- ans and their guardians interested in traveling on the May 11-15 trip should contact the Bend Heroes Foundation immediately. A September trip can be scheduled if more veterans apply than can be honored during the May trip. Register early for Remembrance Walk The Friends Help Friends Committee would like to remind everyone that the annual Remembrance Walk/5K Run is planned for Saturday, March 19. The event will begin with a social hour and registration; the walk/run will begin at 9:30 a.m. While participants may register the morning of the walk/run, pre-registration for the walk/run is request- ed, as it makes the morning of the event go much more smoothly. As an incen- tive to register early, the committee will offer door prizes for those who pre- register. Prizes will include gas cards, as well as meal and drink cards. Friends Helping Friends is again asking for a $5 donation per walker or runner, as well as a $5 donation per shamrock. Children accompanied by adults are free. For donor convenience, there is a drop location inside Heppner City Hall for fundraiser stubs and donations. Due to limited supplies, Feb. 29 will be the last day to order shamrocks.
