SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, December 23, 2015 Mustangs beat out Huskies, Prospectors to dominate week of play different. Heppner jumped out to a 14-7 lead after one quarter and still led 24-18 at halftime. A back-and-forth second half saw the Pan- thers take the lead and get the win by a score of 47-45. The Mustangs had a shot at the end of the game to send it into overtime but the ball bounced off the rim. Collins had a big night for the team as he scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. He also had 1 assist and a steal. Putman finished with 9 points, 9 rebounds and 2 steals. Kin- dled chipped in 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 8 assists in the game. Mur- ray and Currin each scored 2 points for the Mustangs. Murray also had 4 rebounds and Currin 2. Lindsay had 2 steals while Hedman and Kaden Clark had 1 rebound each. The Grant Union Pros- pectors provided another tough and close game for the Mustangs. Heppner led after one quarter 14-13 and 20-17 at the half. Both teams scored 23 points in the second half and the Mustangs won the game by a score of 43-40. Kindle had another great all-around game for the Mustangs as he scored 21 points, had 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals. Putman had 7 points, 6 rebounds and some strong defensive play on the night. Collins chipped in 6 points and 6 rebounds and also had a steal. Lindsay hit a three- pointer and had 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal for the Mustangs. Hedman, Mur- ray and Currin each contir- buted 2 points. Murray also had 5 rebounds and Currin 2. Hedman inished with 2 assists and a steal. Clark finished with 2 rebounds and a steal. A Sherman player’s best attempts couldn’t keep Heppner’s Patrick Collins away from the rim when the Mustangs stomped the Huskies last week. –Photo by Sandra Putman The Heppner Mustang boys’ basketball team won two of their three games this past week. They beat the Sherman County Huskies 64-54, lost to the Imbler Panthers 47-45 and then defeated the Grant Union Prospectors by a score of 43-40. Overall it was a good week of tough non- conference games in which the Mustangs learned a lot about themselves as they prepare for conference play. The game with the Hus- kies started out at a fast pace with the score 16-15 in favor of Heppner at the end of the irst quarter. A big second period in which Sherman outscored the Mustangs 20-9 gave them a 35- 25 lead at the break. Heppner fought back in the third and scored 24 points to only eight for the Huskies. Heppner led at the end of three quarters 49-43. The Mustangs won the fourth quarter 15-11 to get the win 64-54. This was a good win for the Mustangs as Sher- man County is a quality team that should go far in the 1A playoffs. Weston Putman led the Mustangs with 25 points. He also had 16 rebounds. Patrick Collins also hauled down 16 boards and scored 16 points in the game. CJ Kindle scored 16 points and had 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 1 steal. Kevin Mur- ray contributed 2 points, 8 rebounds and an assist. Caden Hedman finished with 2 points and 1 assist while Jake Lindsay scored 2 points and had 1 rebound and a steal. Kolby Currin scored 1 point and had 1 rebound for the team. Imbler High School is always a tough place to go into and win. Receiving special recogni- tion were CJ Kindle, Of- fensive Player of the Year, Patrick Collins, Defensive Player of the Year, and Heppner coach Greg Grant, Coach of the Year. For offense, irst team honors went to quarterback Kaden Clark, running back CJ Kindle, wide receiver Logan Grieb, tight end Weston Putman, and of- fensive linemen Patrick Collins and Kevin Murray. On the defensive side, named to the irst team were defensive linemen Patrick Collins and Kevin Murray, linebackers Weston Put- man and Tommy Bredield, and defensive backs Logan Grieb and CJ Kindle. Mustang alumni game set for Dec. 26 The ifth annual Heppner Mustang alumni basketball game is set to tip off on Saturday, Dec. 26. Heppner alumni are invited to play in the game and reconnect with old friends and teammates. Many of the past years’ games have been high-scoring and illed with lots of action and excitement. The game will have both a men’s and women’s divi- sion. The cost to play is $25 and will include a Mustang t-shirt. The event is a fundraiser for the HHS boys’ bas- ketball team. Mustang girls face rough week of play Heppner JV tames Panthers 45-31 The Heppner Mustang boys’ junior varsity team split its games this week. The team lost to the Sher- man County Huskies 53-49 and then beat the Imbler Panthers 45-31. Against the Huskies, Heppner trailed after one quarter 17-9. The Mustangs fought back and only trailed at halftime by a score of 28-24. Both teams scored 25 points in the second half and the Mustangs lost by a score of 53-49. Derek Howard led the team in scoring with 13. Coby Dougherty was close behind as he scored 12 points in the game. Wyatt Steagall had 9 points, Kevin Smith inished with 7 and Gibson McCurry chipped in 3 points. Dakota Howard and Trent Smith each had 2 points in the game and Hunter Nichols 1. Heppner took the lead early in their game at Im- bler and never looked back. They led 18-7 after one quarter and then 26-15 at halftime. They then out- scored Imbler 19-16 in the second half to get the win 45-31. Heppner boys shoot down Cougars in JV, varsity games Both of the Heppner Mustang boys’ basketball teams came away with victories against the Echo Cougars on Monday night. The Heppner JV boys won their game by a score of 51-15 and the varsity team won 52-39. The Mustang JV team raced out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back. They led the game 25-7 at halftime. A big 20-point third quarter pushed the lead to 45-10 and a close fourth quarter led to the Mustangs getting the win by a score of 51-15. Every member of the Heppner team scored in the game. Coby Dougherty led with 14 points and Trent Smith had 6. Finishing the game with 4 points each were Kevin Smith, Wyatt Steagall, Gibson McCurry and Derek Howard. Peyton Lehman scored 3, and with 2 points each were Hunter Nichols, Keegan Gibbs, Kaden Corbin, Beau Wolt- ers, Cason Mitchell and Dakota Howard. In the varsity game, both teams started out struggling to score. The first quarter ended with Echo leading 8-7. In the second quarter Heppner shooters continued to miss many of their shots. A strong defensive ef- fort by the Mustangs lim- ited the Echo team points also. The Cougars led at halftime 18-16. The third quarter was a big one for the Mustangs as they scored 17 points. They held Echo to 12 and took control of the game and led 33-30 at this point. Heppner stretched their lead out in the fourth as they scored 19 points to only 9 for Echo. The Mustangs made some clutch free throws in the quarter and inished the game going 10-10 for the foul line. Weston Putman had a big scoring night as he netted 31 points. He also hauled down 8 rebounds in the game. Caden Hedman was next with 8 points, 2 assists and 3 rebounds. The Hep- pner girls’ varsity basketball team came out strong against Sherman last week, winning the irst of three contests for the week with a score of 49-32. Their momentum faltered though, when they faced back-to-back losses, irst to Imbler on Friday by 21-54 and then to Grant Union on Saturday with a score of 20-50. The girls will wrap up non-league play in a Pendle- ton tournament next week before facing Irrigon in their irst league game of the season Friday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m. –Photos by Sandra Putman points, ripped down 12 rebounds, had 5 assists and 4 steals. On Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 28 and 29, they both play in Pendleton at the Conven- tion Center. On Wednesday, Dec. 30, the varsity team will travel to Portland to play the Sherman Co. Huskies at the Moda Center. The time of that game is 1:30 p.m.
