Correction
The Morrow County Health District plans to hire a
mid-level provider, such as a nurse practitioner or physi-
cian’s assistant, to work at Pioneer Memorial Clinic in
Heppner, not to provide emergency room coverage as
stated in the health district story in the Sept. 30 Gazette-
Times. Physicians will continue to provide emergency
room coverage. Also, Dr. Ken Wenberg will not conduct
stress testing as stated in the article; stress testing will be
conducted by Dr. Russ Nichols and Dr. Dan Hambleton.

Support for fire hall
bond
To the editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to write this
editorial to show my support for the Heppner fire/rural
fire bond measure.
These dedicated people of our fire department need
our support for a new fire hall/training facility, a new
facility that the firefighters and the community can be
proud of and get a fire hall for the next generations. They
are there for our safety and services more than we know,
not just for fire services. They take much time out of their
lives and schedules to volunteer for services we all need
in this community.
I urge you to show your support along with me in
voting yes on the upcoming bond measure.

Ione grad crosses borders to help students in
Ethiopia
August “Gus” Peterson,
a 2014 Ione High School
graduate, spent two weeks
last month in Ethiopia help-
ing to build an elementary
school, along with 12 other
students from Oregon State
University Honors Col-
lege, their professor, and
volunteers with Engineers
Without Borders.
Peterson said it was
a great experience, even
though a promised excava-
tor never arrived and they
ended up digging the foun-
dation with shovels. The
group also prepared rebar
for the project, but couldn’t
mix cement as planned due
to heavy rains.
The school is located
in Debre Birhan, a city of
110,000, and it will serve
about 1,000 students. It is

constructed by Habitat for
Humanity. Ethiopia is one
of the world’s poorest coun-
tries, and the school is being
built by volunteers from
the local community and
abroad.
Peterson said many
friendly children visited the
site whenever the crew was
working, curious and ready
to help.
