Ruth and Curt Eadler and daughter, Kelli, moved into their home on 540 Hagar in 2008 when Curt’s work at the PGE McCarty Plant in Boardman brought him to the area. Their home sits on al- most an acre of property and is just yards from the creek. The many plant- ings, large shop, henhouse, neighboring Hager Park, and the rustic collectibles Ruth uses in their landscape give their yard a country homestead feel. Wildlife enjoys the yard also, in- cluding raccoons, skunks, beaver, cedar waxwings, ospreys, blue heron and hawks. Houses have been put up to welcome birds and bats. Grazing deer have prompted the Eadlers to build wire cages around many of their plantings and put fencing around their large vegetable garden. Fruit trees were already established when they moved in, and the Eadlers added more. Sadly, as with so many residents of Mor- row County, several trees died this year due to weath- er conditions. Their red raspberries came through just fine, and provide lots of jams and pies. Ruth keeps a nice-sized herb garden, too. In addition to their fruit and vegetables plantings, they have a variety of perennials and annual flowers. A challenge in the yard was a mass of overgrown irises growing through chain link fencing, which were eventually moved to one of several raised beds they have built. Improvements to the house include new win- dows, roof and front door. A flag pole was put in to fly the American flag year- round. Their shady back yard with patio provides privacy and a hammock to enjoy it in. The family says it likes listening to Willow Creek as it tumbles through. Soil is rocky, and the Eadlers have a rock pile they add to regularly in the part of their yard called ‘the field.’ Loads of dirt brought in are screened before used, so the rock pile continues to grow. Soil is amended with peat moss and compost. While working on their property, they have found older red bricks, lots of golf balls and even some golf clubs, a harmonica reed, an Olympia stubby beer bottle, cast bullet, and a toy car. Some of the many rus- tic and charming collect- ibles Ruth uses in landscap- ing are from the Lakeview, OR family home where she was born and raised. Curt’s family is originally from Illinois, and he grew up in Portland. Ruth is employed at Pioneer Memorial Hospi- tal’s dietary department. She can often be seen out walking with the family pet dogs, Sage and Casey. Harry the cat stays home. Kelli, who is a junior at Heppner High School, works in the yard with her folks. One of her contri- butions is a pine tree she received through a reading program at Heppner Ele- mentary, brought home and planted close to the creek where it grows and thrives. The Eadlers enthusias- tically support the nursery at MCGG-Green Feed & Seed and the greenhouse sales of the FFA organization at HHS. Some plantings, such as peonies, are shared with them by friends. Kelli’s favorite plant is their Scotch pine and Ruth’s are the succulents. Curt doesn’t have one fa- vorite; he “likes them all.” Curt says he has always “played in the dirt” and Ruth remembers “always gardening” although some years they are “more into it then others.” As part of their advice they mention to “find what you like and go for it.” Yard of the Month rec- ognition is sponsored by the Heppner Volunteers, MCGG-Green Feed and the City of Heppner. Contact Kay Proctor if you would like to be a part of the Hep- pner Volunteers.
