Mustang girls place second in
state golf
The Heppner Mustang
golf teams placed well at
the recent OSAA State Golf
Championships. The girls’
team capped off a great
season, as they won six of
the eight tournaments in
which they played, with an
impressive second-place
finish at the 4A/3A/2A/1A
tournament. The boys’ team
moved up three places on
day two and finished in sev-
enth place in the 3A/2A/1A
tournament.
The Heppner girls’

a 93-97 for 190, and she
finished in 17 th place. Mad-

Rea each shot an identical
score of 98-100 for 98 and
finished tied for 24 th . There
were a total of 52 golfers in
the tournament.
The boys’ team com-
peted against 11 other
teams. Many were private
3A schools who have play-
ers who only golf for their
school. The Heppner team
was 10 th after day one but
they rallied and played
much better on day two
place by shooting a 87-85
for 172. The three first-year
golfers on the team were
led by Brian Rill who shot
a 102-103 for 205 to finish
54 th . Ross Cutsforth was
next with a 117-94 for 211,
which was good enough for
57 th and Tommy Bredfield
shot a 116-98 for 214 to fin-
ish 58 th . There were a total
of 65 golfers at this year’s
tournament.
The girls’ team will

Boy Scouts place flags around
Heppner
Willow Creek Boy
Scout Troop 691 displayed
42 American flags in yards
all over Heppner Monday
in honor of Memorial Day.
Residents who purchased
the service as part of the
troop’s fundraiser benefit-
ted from having the Boy
Scouts place the flag in
their yard first thing in
the morning and display it
throughout the day.
The fundraiser gives
residents the opportunity
to have a three-foot by five-
foot flag and pole in their
front lawn four holidays
each year: Memorial Day,
Flag Day, Independence
Day and Veterans Day.
Homes around Heppner
showed their patriotism Me-
morial Day with flags put up
by the local Boy Scouts.
“It’s not too late to sign
up for the remaining holi-
days this year,” said Dieter
Waite, one of the adult scout
leaders for the troop. “We
are very pleased with the
response and the support
we are getting from the
community. Many people
have commented about how
nice the flags look and how
important it is to share their
patriotic spirit.”
For $45 the first year
and $40 each subsequent
year, members of Troop
691 will place a nylon flag
in residents’ yards. The
flag are displayed from
early in the morning to late
in the evening on the four
holidays. The next holiday
where the flags will be dis-
played is Flag Day, Sunday,
June 14. Funds raised from

the state championship by
shooting a 692 over the two
days. Heppner followed
with a 745 and La Grande
was third with 771. Other
scores were Crook County
776, North Valley 780,
Taft 788, Scappoose 799,
Blanchet Catholic 813 and
Newport 905.
The second-place fin-
ish matched what the girls’
team did last year at the
state tournament.
The highest-placing
individual for the Mus-
tangs was Sophie Grant,
who finished as a medalist
in ninth place overall. She
shot 84-88 for a two-day
total of 172. Emily Rea was
next with a 93-92 for 185,
which was good enough for
to finish in seventh place
overall. Cascade Christian
won the championship by
shooting a team score of
592. St. Mary’s was next at
620 and Catlin Gabel was
third at 625. The rest of the
team scores were Oakridge
639, Oregon Episcopal 686
and Regis 688. Heppner fin-
ished with a 743. Taft shot
a 744, Vale 766, Blanchet
Catholic 775, Wallowa/Jo-

The boys’ team finished
in 8th place at last year’s
state championship.
Logan Grieb led the
team with scores of 80-81
for a two-day total of 161
to finish in 16 th place. Se-
nior John Propheter played
some of his best golf of the
year and finished in 28 th
second place trophy and
medals from the OSAA
State Golf Championship
the last two years. Their
leadership, skill, hard work
and fun personalities will
be missed from the team
next year. The team will
have two of the area’s best
golfers returning in Sophie
Grant and Amanda Rea.
The boys’ team will
lose seniors Ross Cutsforth
and John Propheter. The
team will return Logan
Grieb, Tommy Bredfield
and hopefully, along with
the girls’ team, will attract
some incoming freshmen to
play next season.
The Mustangs’ head
coach is Greg Grant. He is
assisted by Matt Scrivner
and Barry Munkers.
