SIX - Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, March 25, 2015 Ione track brings home medals from first regular meet Young team shows promising season start Ione junior Jorge Aguilar sets a PR with a 40’ 0.5” shot put. –Photo by Paula Emmel By Paula Emmel The Ione track team attended the Mullen-Leavitt Invitational in The Dalles Thursday, March 19, bring- ing home several medals to start their season. Ione Track and Field has a mostly young team this year. However, some returning juniors started right where they left off last year. Rachel Holland threw her javelin with a new personal record (PR) of 103’9”, an increase of 6’7” inches over her best last year. Jorge Aguilar bested his shot put distance by 1’3” for a new PR of 40’ 0.5”. Also returning was sophomore Karsen Dumler, who set a PR in shot put with a distance of 26’8”, an improvement of 1’9”. Returning sophomore Ashley Medina threw her discus just 6 feet short of her personal best, making a strong showing of the season to come. Returning sophomore Hector Aguilar ran all three of his races just short of his personal bests from last year. We look for good things from him. Returning junior Ann Rietmann had a trouble- some start with getting penned inside and had to drop back and go around the pack in her 800M run. She did a good job at 3:08.26a. Also a returning junior, Jessie Flynn had a strong showing of her tal- ent, placing high in all of her events—second in high jump and 300M hurdles and fourth in long jump. Returning senior Os- kar Peterson was unable to compete, as he was di- agnosed with a torn ACL and meniscus of his knee, an injury he incurred dur- ing basketball season and that had been troubling him throughout practice. He will need surgery and likely miss the rest of track season, much to his disap- pointment. A new-comer, senior TJ Patton, competed in his first 1500M with an impres- sive time of 5:30.99a. He also threw the discus. With some technique and getting over being sick, he will do well this season. Another new athlete to the team is junior Frances Knop. She putted her shot 22’1” and threw her discus 34’3”. With some experi- ence, she also will be a good contender. Incoming freshman Kaitlin Garrett placed eighth with her throw of 64’3” in the discus. She also putted the shot 24’6.5”. Incoming freshman Maggie Flynn ran a Personal Best 100M (15.39a) and Long Jumped a personal best of 13 feet. Also new to the team this year is exchange stu- dent David Smidmajer from the Czech Republic. He participated in two sprints and threw the discus. Rounding out the team are sophomores Henry Pad- berg, Chris Pryor, Yaniva Garcia and Noah Lawson, and freshmen Sonia Me- dina, Maggie Flynn, Tyson Epperson and Emily Taylor. All of them showed well in their individual competi- tion. Eighteen of the 20 athletes competed at The Dalles. Ione looks forward to a rewarding season. Next meet is April 3 at the Car- nival of Speed in Milton- Freewater at 11 a.m. To fol- low the team’s competition, go to www.athletic.net to find individual rankings and scores. The MCHC group will depart from St. Patrick’s Senior Center in Heppner at 7:45 a.m. and arrive back at the senior center at 5 p.m. The WAAAM Air & Auto Museum has one of the largest collections of still-flying antique aero- planes and still-driving antique automobiles in the country. Plus, April 11 is a sec- ond Saturday of the month, which happens to be the day of the month when WAAAM volunteers fly and drive the artifacts for visitors’ enjoyment. Cost of the trip will be $10 per-person admission to the museum, an esti- mated $10 per person for gas and driver for those who ride the senior bus, and cost of lunch. Lunch will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are food vendors on-site at the museum; cost for lunch from the vendors is estimated at $7, but partici- pants may also eat off-site or bring a sack lunch. A sign-up sheet is avail- able at the senior center in Heppner. Questions, call Dave DeMayo at 541-676-8017.
