The Heppner High School boys’ basketball team capped off an out- standing season by earning the fifth-place trophy at the OSAA State Basketball Championship Tournament. The Mustangs ended their season with an overall re- cord of 19-6. The Mustangs opened the state tournament with the Knappa Loggers, a team the Mustangs had played earlier in the season and had beaten by 11 points. This game would be much closer and the Mustangs would also win this one in over- time by a score of 56-54. Knappa led after the first quarter of play 12-10. The Mustangs then took control of the second quarter and led at halftime by the score of 26-23. Knappa came back strong in the third and outscored the Mustangs 20- 14 to take a 43-40 lead into the fourth quarter. Heppner turned up the defensive pressure and held the Log- gers to only four points in the fourth quarter. Heppner could only manage to score seven themselves, but it was enough to end the game tied at 47-47. In overtime, Heppner outscored Knappa 9-7 to secure the win 56-54. Patrick Collins led the team with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 blocked shot. Logan Grieb scored 14 points and had 7 rebounds and 2 assists in the game. Weston Putman followed with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Ross Cutsforth was next with 6 points, 1 assist and 1 blocked shot for the Mustangs. CJ Kindle added 3 points and 6 big assists to go along with 1 steal. Jesse Corbin also scored 3 points in the game and Caden Hedman had 2 rebounds. With the win, Heppner would head to the semi- finals to play the Toledo Boomers. The Mustangs had also already played Toledo earlier in the year at a tournament and lost to them. In this game, Hep- pner jumped out to a 12-9 lead after one quarter of play. Toledo had a strong second quarter, where they would outscore the Mus- tangs 15-5 to take a 24-17 lead into halftime. Heppner came back strong in the third quarter and pushed the tempo of the game. The Mustangs outscored the Boomers 16-12 to pull within 36-32 as the fourth quarter started. Toledo chose to hold the ball for much of the fourth quarter. The Mustangs had to foul to put them on the foul line to try to get the ball back. To- ledo ended up making most of their free-throws in the quarter and they outscored the Mustangs 13-8 to win the game 49-41. Collins again led the team in scoring with 11. He also had 6 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. Kindle followed with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Putman scored 6 points and had 2 rebounds in the game. Cutsforth also 6 points and he had 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal. Grieb had 5 points, 2 rebounds and 2 Oregon Care Partners offers free caregiver training opportunities If you—or someone you know—are caring for a loved one, or are interested in learning more about caregiver training oppor- tunities in Oregon, visit OregonCarePartners.com to register and sign up for free. Corbin and Hedman each scored 3 points. Hedman also had 2 rebounds and 2 assists for the Mustangs. With that loss, Heppner would play for third place in the tournament against the Regis Rams. The Mus- tangs started the game out slowly and would trail at the end of the first quarter by a score of 17-6. Some adjustments were to the game plan and the Heppner team outscored the Rams in the second quarter 12-7. Heppner then trailed 24-18 at halftime. Heppner came out in the third quarter and dominated it by a score of 18-9 to take a 36-33 lead into the fourth quarter. The Mustangs could not keep up the pace in the fourth quarter and ended up losing the game 50-45. That meant that the team would collect the fifth-place trophy for the tournament. However, along with the fifth-place trophy, the Mustangs also received the coveted tournament Sportsmanship Award (see accompanying story). Pat- rick Collins was named to the Second Team All- Tournament. Kindle led the team in scoring with 11. He also had 3 rebounds and 2 as- sists. Collins finished with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1 steal. Grieb scored 9 points and had 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal for the Mustangs. Put- man chipped in 7 points, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. Kevin Murray scored 4 points and had 3 rebounds and 1 steal in the game. Cutsforth had 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 assist, while Hedman contributed 2 points, 1 as- sist and 1 steal for the team. The Mustangs will lose three seniors off of this year’s tournament team. They are Ross Cutsforth, Jesse Corbin and Jerimi- ah Petzoldt. They will be missed, but Heppner will return nine players who got state tournament experience this year. After the initial disappointment of feeling they could have done better at this year’s tournament, every one of them, to a man, said they are ready to put in the extra work so they can make it back to the state tournament next year.
