Heppner Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon Wednesday, February 11, 2015 - FIVE Mustangs ranked third in state after split Local players make 2015 East Shrine weekend All-Star team The Heppner Mustang boys basketball team won one game and lost one last week in Columbia Basin Conference play. The Mus- tangs (14-4, 5-3) are cur- rently the third-ranked team in the state. They team beat the fourth-ranked Stanfield Tigers 59-58 on Tuesday night. They then travelled to take on the number-one team in the state, the Irrigon Knights, and lost that game by a score of 66-48. In what was a close game throughout, Stanfield led at the end of the first quarter 20-14. The Mus- tangs outscored the Tigers 19-9 in the second to take the lead into the locker room 33-29 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Tigers made a run and scored 21 points while the Mustangs collected 14. Stanfield had the lead 50-47 as the fourth quar- ter started. Another close quarter saw the Mustangs trail by five points with just seconds left. Logan Grieb made a three-pointer to bring the team within 2 points. Heppner had to foul quickly to force the Tigers to shoot free throws or they would be able to run the clock out. With only 10 seconds left in the game, the Mus- tangs had to foul the Tigers six times to get them into the bonus and to the free- throw line. They pressured the Tigers and fouled them as soon as they touched the ball. The seventh Hep- pner team foul sent a Tiger player to the line with 2.3 seconds left in the game. He missed the front end of the one and one and CJ Kindle grabbed the long rebound. He turned and rushed to center court and shot the ball as time expired and the buzzer sounded. He was fouled on the shot and fell to the floor hard. Kindle was awarded three free-throws for his effort. He calmly stepped to the line all by himself and made the first two shots to tie the score. Stanfield then took a timeout to try and “ice” him. After the timeout he toed the line, took a deep breath and made the final free-throw to give the Mus- tangs the win 59-58. Logan Grieb led the Mustangs in scoring with 16 points. He also had 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 blocked shot. Kindle fin- ished the game with 13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Patrick Col- lins also scored 13 points, had 12 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 blocked shots in the game. Jesse Corbin played some valuable minutes and chipped in 8 points and had 2 rebounds. Ross Cutsforth finished with 4 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 blocked shot. Weston Put- man was solid as ever and scored 3 points, had 7 re- bounds and 1 steal. Kevin Murray gave the team a strong effort and scored 2 points, had 2 rebounds and 1 steal. Heppner was outshot by the Tigers from the field CJ Kindle steadies his aim at the free-throw line. Irrigon is the defend- ing state champion and they feature the last two “players of the year” in 2A basketball. Heppner was outscored in every quarter of the game but they played hard to the very end. The Mustangs trailed 20-13 after one quarter of play and Irrigon outscored the Mustangs 17-15 in the second quarter to make it 37-28 at halftime. It was close again in the third, but Irrigon won that quarter 13-9 to make the score 50-37 as the game entered the fourth quarter. A 16-11 advantage for the Knights in the quarter made the final score of the game 66-48. Collins continued his streak of double-doubles as he went for 18 points and had 12 rebounds. Putman followed him with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Grieb had 7 points in the game and also recorded 2 rebounds and 2 assist. Kindle had 5 points, 3 assist and 1 steal for the night. Cutsforth chipped in 4 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist and Caden Hedman scored 2 points and had 2 rebounds for the Mustangs. The Mustangs shot 44 percent from the field in the game to the Knights’ 55 percent. Heppner once again won the battle of the boards, this time with a 26- 13 advantage. Heppner will travel to play the Weston-McEwen TigerScots on Friday night. It will be Senior Night on Saturday when the team hosts the Culver Bulldogs in their last conference game. Mustang senior boys and their families will be honored for their commit- ment to the program. The seniors are Jesse Corbin, Jerimiah Petzoldt and Ross Cutsforth. ‘Why BMCC?’ poster contest spurs creativity in Morrow County students Why BMCC? That’s the question Blue Moun- tain Community College asked students in Morrow County who participated in a poster contest to show why students choose to attend BMCC after high school graduation. One contest entry was selected from each of the three par- ticipating Morrow County high schools, with the win- ner taking home $250. Heppner winning poster. Heppner winners were Demi Schmidt, Olivia Schmidt, Katlyn Harper and Marissa McKague of Hep- pner High School. Other county winners were Britta- ny Zuercher of Irrigon High School and Dixie Gonzalez of Riverside High School. The posters will be used for marketing purposes for BMCC. The scholarships were funded by the BMCC Foundation Board’s discre- tionary fund. Each poster entry was required to contain creative original artwork and text designed to answer the question of why students should consider attending BMCC upon graduation. The contest was the Are You Known As A Christian? In John 13:35 Jesus said, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to an- other. How do you treat those you love? Don't you take every opportunity to get together with them. My children live so far away I only see them once or twice a year. I always yearn for it to be far more often. When we get together, sometimes we have special activities and sometimes not: we just hang out. But it's wonderful just to be with them regard- less. Don't miss out on a Cmistian heritage. Find a Bible believing church and join them every time they get together. People will conclude that you re- ally are a Christian. (And maybe you actually will be!) They said their hope was that the contest would inspire a thought- ful process for students to consider BMCC as an op- tion after high school, as well as to enable a student’s parents to better understand the opportunities for tuition cost savings, workforce training opportunities and a jump-start on a four-year degree at a local community college.
